John always seems to use the word water in his songs and if not water sea, ocean etc.

What is his addiction with this and what does he mean by it?

what star sign is john? i'd look it up but i just wonder whether it falls in the "water" element. mine falls in the water element which seems rather fitting since i love it. water is such a strange thing because it can be a gas (vapour), a liquid (obviously water) and a solid (ice). i just find it to be a really interesting thing and have always been fascinated by it. it is shapeless but forms the shape of whatever container its in, its peaceful but also can be incredibly dangerous, its affected by the moon's gravity (why we get tides) and the moon is traditionally a very feminine essence (since women's menstrual cyles are also governed by the moon). john has strong masculine and feminine characteristics. i think he embraces the feminine side of himself and this would reflect his interest in water. water also symbolises emotion (to me) and i think this fits very well with my perception of john.

Another thought is the traditional connection between water and salvation, water and redemption but also water as the opposite of burning and fire.

Well I don't think it needs much elaboration, at least not the rebirth, redemption/salvation part as it speaks for itself. John works a lot with dichotomies in his lyrics, not necessarily intertextually but if you see to his total production of lyrics, hence also the usage of water/fire - from the top of my head: Shadows collide/ To record only water, Afterglow/Water, Life's a bath/... glued to a building on fire.
...and just to make it interesting...

In English, they actually say Pisces, not fish...I always get confused by that as well.

I'm a Pisces myself and I have many Pisces-related explanations...just give me some time. Also the differences between February Pisces, who are dominant, cruel and pretty stable and March Pisces, who are mild, quiet, nervous...there are many things to talk about.

Not only is water a sign of purity and rebirth, but I also see it as a symbol of how you adapt to life. Because I always think of when you put water into a container and the way it takes the shape of anything you put it in. And to me, that symbolizes how everything influences and shapes the person we all become. Just a thought.

But from what I get out of the way John uses water as a metaphor, I usually think of the whole rebirth theory...because like Maz said, it fits my perception of him.
"I prefer to learn everything through music. If you want divinity, the music in every human being and their love for music is pretty much it. It's the big indication of their spirituality and their ability to love and make love, or feel pain or joy, and really manifest it, really be real." - Jeff Buckley

Or just perhaps cause it means alot to him just for no reason.

I love water, i have never really lived far away from the sea and when i did we had a swimming pool so that was ok.

I love water, one of my favourite places to go walking is the pier in Dun Laoghare, lots of water. And i will always stop and have a listen if i am walking by a river or a waterfall.

And i'm a Leo!

Does all that make sense?!!!! :whee:

I like the idea of rebirth. If i have any time tonight i might print off the ideas everyone put in here and listento all the songs that include some kind of water in them to see what else i can come up with.

One thingt that i can remember at the mo is how life needs water but too much water can kill.
For example if there was no land where would humans live? and if there was no water how would humans live without it?

I'd love to hear about other people interpations on it a bit more before i get too much into this (i'm a bit sad with John's songs but it helps me get out of bed in the morning). Hopefully i'll have a really long answer to put to this soon.

I agree with what Maz was saying I think the idea of purity is relevant.

But I think its just something that John is inspired by and something he feels a lot can be said creatively about it. Its like the topic of death, many of John's songs relate to afterlife. John sid in an interview many of his songs are spoken in the voice of someone who is already dead. Its a subject that he has a lot of knowledge on and he is fascianted by, just like the water thing
