It seems to me that in the very beginning RHCP were given a magic bag full of spells that make their music special and, let's be simple, cool.
They were waiting but during Mother's Milk they used a bit. Then pretty much during BSSM, then saved a bit while OHM, used a lot during Cali, and the rest of spells went to By The Way. I felt the finishing of "spells" during By The Way album. Amazing songs were changing with pretty strange. Saying strange, I mean that they sounded like Anthony was in much of hurry while writting the words (why, if it took them 3 years to make By The Way???) and others with the same problems wrote music. I mean songs like: Universally Speaking, I Could Die For You, Throw Away Your Television, Warm Tape, Zephyr Song... Do I have to mention Time, Body Of Water, Ranaway (which became public recently)? And even though Don't Forget Me, Tear,Venice Queen, This Is The Place even By The Way are so much good that they are making BTW one of my favourite records. Then - the end! Dudes began to produce some stuff that has no logical explaination in my mind...
What I am about?! Let's take any even average song (I don't even mean a good ones). It is always a completed "product". It may has a crappy lyrics or bad voice of singer, but at least it has a rhythm or melody or anything... Mostly melody. The one (or a part of "one") you can whistle, or sing (in a way of "na-na-na", for example) or knock with your foot... It is so, cuz you understand it. Take any song from BSSM or Cali and you will get what I mean... Recent songs by RHCP are not of these kind. They are mess. In any sence. Lyrics are shit, to my point of view... "21st Century ", "Ready Made" (or how you preffer it to spell), "Dani California"... "Desecration Smile" is not that bad at least musically, but it is similar to Godsmack stuff too much (like "Fortune Faded" is similar to "Orange Crash" by REM)...
I don't like the song called Dani California. When I first listened to By The Way song I was going nuts, I was excited that was the song that was blowing the mind away. Tear - the same blasting effect but with polar result, pretty sad one. But these were alive. I watched the video of DC twice and I can't know figure out for myself what this song is like. It is EMPTY.
Video is crap. Have I said that? What they wanted to say with that Nirvana make up??? Bands' stereotypes, someone here said... May be but was it too important to "turn into" Nirvana?! Red Hots are also not even close to Beatles... May be that was funny... I think that this video in any sence is worse than John's session with Ross Haflin!
In spite of that I will buy their next album. I will go to Prague. I will see Red Hots. If I will hear DC at the concert I will puke, but I won't like this band less. I am just a bit upset and sad, cuz my expectations are going to the ass...

QUALITY
One Hot Minute is critisized pretty a lot. Yeah, this album is one of the hardest by its mood. Sort of depresive one. Sort of album played by disbalanced band. But each single song from there is better for me than at least 7-8 songs I heard that Peppers played recently. Even songs from OHM have character. There is no in Dani California. There is no in other songs I mentioned. It is not the question of style. I listen to many bands of very different styles. I have never been the "style-maniac". But I still feel which song is ripping my soul on parts (with joy or sadness - doesn't matter) and which not!
May be there is something wrong with guys down there?! I don't know.
Really, California rest in peace!

From what I have heard of these songs..they have, possibly a more "commercial" feel to them..by this..I mean more accessible to more people..a select few will really get into a song like..Around the World, but I think more people will get more out of songs like Dani California and Tell Me Baby.
Crap album sleeve or no crap album sleeve
Bad song names or no bad song names
Weather Anthony is re-generating old lyrics from old songs or not..I still have high hopes for this album

i love how there seems to be a progression through the song and the first guitar solo from john, the vocals mid-way through and the huge solo at the end are all incredible because they are so different to the song but fit in none-the-less. the only thing that i will agree with what some of you have said, is the lyrics which seem uninspired and a little bit s*** to put it bluntly.

and if you listen to the song in head phones you'll notice a lot of new guitar bits and stuff, i did at least.

But I agree with Serhiy that OHM has better moments than the newer songs, or at least that people underestimate that album too much. Even John.
Well, after reading this, is sure is going to be interesting watching and hearing the new stuff!
