I have to share an idea with you which keeps on spinning around in my mind.
Somewhere on this forum I read that Iva encountered Frusciantes art by reading his lyrics first without knowing the actual music - and that she considered them to be greatly contemporary poems. It wasn't the same in my case. I first listened to his music for a long time until I even started to notice his lyrics. Back then the music and the sound of his voice had entirely spoken for itself. Yet, the more I listened to his albums the more the lyrics grew on me. Like the pieces of an ungraspable puzzle those strange and otherworldly and all too often contradictory words seem to make sense more and more. When the Empyrean came out I immediatly absorbed the lyrics as much as the music. But it was not until a few months ago that I realized to its full extend just how great and brilliant Frusciantes lyrics are. I mean, they aren't just very good and exceptional... they truely are the work of a genius. A genius no less than poets like William Blake or Rainer Maria Rilke.
The most exciting aspect about Johns art is that it seems to work perfectly on every possible level. If I only listen to the music without paying attention to the lyrics - it makes me happy and touches me somewhere deep within. If I listen to the music as an unification of sound and words - it's like I'm constantly exploring new layers of meaning. And if I only read the lyrics and see them plainly as poems - again, it works perfectly well, as if they were never meant to be something else but to speak for themselves.
Now, here is the idea. Wouldn't it be awesome if there existed a book which contains all the lyrics Frusciante has ever presented to the world? I mean a real book with a simple and beautiful cover (just as his music is) to buy at a bookstore! A real book of real pages containing all the lyrics from Niandra Lades to The Empyrean, including the Internet Album, the Brown Bunny Songs, For Air, etc.
Unfortunatly I'm not a publisher. And of course, I don't know if John or his Record Company would give permission. But as an idea it really strucks and amazes me. Every famous band has got its own book of lyrics - even though they might be shallow as p*** on concrete. If there is one songwriter out there at the moment whose lyrics deserve to be printed and who ought to be recognized as a poet as much as a muscician it would be Mr. John Frusciante, wouldn't it?
