All of his albums have been about capturing dynamic and brilliant performances by himself and other musicians in a way that allows their work to breathe and speak differently each new time listening to them rather than feeling the same --- that's really really difficult to accomplish.

Totally! The numerous little sounds, connections and contradictions are what makes his music new almost each time one listens to it. And by the way, I think The Empyrean wouldn't make much sense live, or at least it wouldn't create the same sonic, space-shifting atmosphere if it was acoustic.
But *cough* if he would e.g. do what he did for Shadows and record audio or - even better - video of himself doing the future songs at home, that would almost be like a concert.
If he doesn't like the "hype", I'm afraid nothing can be done about it, this new world's marketing machine has reflected on people so much that they'll often like something just to be proud of themselves for liking stuff. There will always be those who hype something for the sake of hyping; but there are others who genuinely appreciate it and peel it off, skin by skin, each time discovering something new.
And this needs more hearts.
