Learn scales. Make sure you learn the major and minor pentatonic scales. If you muck around in pentatonic scales enough you'll figure out what all the notes sound like and you can get the sound in your head out. You really just have to learn scales and play a lot of bad solos before you know what all the notes sound like and develop a pattern that you like.

"Well, it was put to me by "that guy" when I was, like, four. So I went into my parents' record collection and found a rock'n'roll compilation. And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante

After learning the major and minor scales, learn the pentatonic scale; it's the easiest to solo in. Then learn the Dorian and Aeoilan scales if you like.

aeolian = minor scale

i also suggest studying solos...while not a direct link to improvisation it will give you technique and will give you ideas on voicings and stuff

well it is and it isnt

the aelion is what we would refer to as the natural minor. it consists of 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 1

then the are the minor harmonic and melodic
both are like the minor scale but the harmonic has a natural 7th to become 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 1
and the melodic has a natural 6th in addition to the natural 7th to become 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 1

they the harmonic is more used in the context of chords (hence HARMONIC)so that the 5th will be a dominant as in order for there to be a scale it must have a fitfh which is a dominant (so the natural minor scale isnt really a scale, just a mode). using it will result in the phyrian becoming a major chord or a dominant which is very common eg.Amin-C-G-E as found in put your lights on by santana. usually the E would be considered out of key as it has a G# whereas C has only a G. as a scale it is a bit dissonant though but still nice. gives an arabic feel

thats why they made the melodic which sounds slightly less strained to due the absense of the previous tone and a half interval

note im not 100% sure on this and i might have left something out but it should be ok
