Hi guys

Im trying to record guitar on my laptop..... I am a beginner, so forgive for my ignorance :)
My setup is Electric guitar going into amp, then i have my headphones from amp going to my USB mixer (yamaha MW10), then Mixer going to my Laptop via USB... I am trying to use Cubase on my laptop.... I also have audacity and Cool edit 2000. The problem is i have no response on my mixer, when i strum my guitar... Is this a good setup, can you guys advise me on any info you have please?? Thanks

Well, this sounds like a level mismatch problem. What amp are you using? If it doesn't have a LINE OUT or a kind of DI OUT (whatever they want to call it), then I strongly advise you to NOT use that headphones output, it just isn't designed for that purpose, even if you succeed in matching the levels, the sound will suck ;)

The best you can do is to use a microphone on your amp (even a "cheap vocal one" will do alright, but not 5$ of course :) ), it is actually how guitars are usually recorded professionally!

If you don't have a mic or you don't want to deal with all the concerns it brings (levels, position, eq, etc...), then you'd better just plug your guitar straight into the mixer! :) Yes, it's not a stupid idea, especially when you are not using any effect or pedal. Think about that: 90% of electric guitar sound on John's solo records before 2004 are done like that, and even on BSSM album, and if you want another example, Dave Gilmour's Another Brick In The Wall solo it's recorded with a Les Paul with P90s straight into the mixing board, and then it was added some compression and reverb/echo AFTER! ;)

Of course you can add any post recording editing you like, or even use some "real time processing software" like Guitar Rig, but I have no experience with those programs.

Feel free to ask if you have any doubt!

PS: Nice image

ggg, thanks for your advice!!!!!

I have gone with the option of plugging guitar straight into mixer. But a problem has arisen.... My mixer doesn't pick up my guitar when i strum it!!!! But cubase picks up my voice when i unplug the usb from mixer. Do you think this is a sound setting issue or have i plugged my guitar into wrong plug????
Please feel free to give me any advise regarding this

Cheers

Of course I'd like to help you, but I'm sorry I don't get what's happening very well. What do you mean "cubase picks up my voice when i unplug the usb from mixer"?

As far as I understood you want to use your yamaha mixer as audio interface for your laptop, instead of the laptop's sound card (and this is a great idea because they are usually worse in quality than a usb mixer's interface), is that right?

Now, let's divide the problem in stages:
1) You did the right connections and settings with your guitar and mixer - To check that, just ignore the computer and try to plug some speakers to the mixer output, you should be able to hear your guitar (and also you can set the gain on that channel).
2) You did the right connections and settings with your mixer and laptop - This means usually you have some kind of drivers installed and if you are using windows (I suppose so) you can "see" that new audio interface. It's been long time I haven't used cubase, so I have no idea about the new versions, but you should be able to see the yamaha usb interface and use it as recording and/or playback device.

Back to your sentence "cubase picks up my voice when i unplug the usb from mixer" it makes me think you have an integrated microphone in your laptop, thus when there is not USB audio interface connected, it uses the default one, so your integrated mic... could be?
