Hey, I recently discovered a site called JFTab, (which seems to be no longer active but it's a great site nonetheless) and they have a whole page dedicated to the gear Frusciante has used through the years. For Mother's Milk, he has a CE-1, DS-2 and WH10, and then it skips BSSM and goes straight to the Californication era. I was watching the show they did in 1990 at Pinkpop, and John seems to have four pedals :S So what pedal did he get between 1989ish to 1992? Because according to the BSSM pedals thread (on this forum), he also had a Big Muff in BSSM... and it wasn't there at Pinkpop, so it's all very confusing for me!! :L

Can anyone tell me what pedals he bought in around the early 1990's please. I'm trying to re-create John's early sound as best I can, so far I have a DS-2, WH10v2 (which I love to pieces, and I don't get why it's getting so much hate) and some Zoom G2 multi effects pedal, so what else do I need?

Thanks for any replies,

nom_nom

(PS-My birthday is in two weeks, and with the money I am hopefully getting, do you think I should get Small Clone Chorus or a Big Muff Pi? I hope to eventually get both, but which one is the more "useful" pedal? :P)

John broke his CE-1 in the early 90's, so he used a DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus (for the recording of Blood Sugar, too!). The other pedals on Pinkpop are the WH10, the DS-2 and a Boss RV-2 Digital Reverb. For Mother's Milk he used a MXR Phase 90 (look at the interviews on I-M.net!)

On Blood Sugar he used the DOD Chorus, the WH10, the Big Muff and the DS-2! He said in every interview some other things, but you can hear every effect on the album.

Live he used a DS-2, "a little fuzz sound" (I'm sure the Big Muff), the WH10 and his new CE-1 (you can see his effect pedals on one video of the Milan 1992 show on YouTube!)

Live I use the Small Clone, at home my CE-1 or the DOD. Small Clone is great! The Big Muff isn't that expensive, buy it later ;)

BTW: I didn't use my original WH10's since the V2. I love it :)

Omg, how could he break a CE-1?! :L This is fantastic info, thankyou so much; and it's great I've finally found someone who actually likes the V2! :P

Yeah, Chili_Pat told pretty much everything of the pedals in the early 90's. I would also say that you should buy the small clone, 'cause a chorus is so important for the BSSM Sound.
And what I would also recommend you is to save your money for a tube amp ( i highly recommend you the bugera v22 - it's cheap and has an amazing vintage sound imo) . then you have everything you need for the main frusciante sound ;)

BTW I also love my V2 :D

Yes another V2 lover!! :D Well this has just enforced me buying the Small Clone even more, it looks and sounds great from the research I've done, and I've found one pretty cheap haha. Thanks for the amp suggestion, I'll check it out :)

Thumbs up for the Small Clone!
Houseman, you're a really cool dude ;)
The amp is the right choice (for the beginning of playing with tube amps) but try it first!

BTW: Thumbs up for the V2, too! :>

(Sorry if this is a double post, just thought I'd apologise beforehand to stop any trouble :L)

Just got this screenshot of John's pedals from the Pinkpop show RHCP did in 1990, while they were doing "Backwoods" :)

My link

That's the WH10 and DS-2, and what looks like a DOD?

The pedal that comes after the DS2 the blue one. Look carefully. I put a good pic of this pedal in the attachment

BTW, i think Chili_Pat posted exactly the same picture in the Mothers Milk Gear Thread in the Workshop section of this Forum.

The Bugera has too much headroom for a practice amp (or even a small gig). I'd highly recommend the Blackstar HT-5 for practice, since pushing the clean channel to just before it breaks up is important in nailing a lot of Frusciante's sounds.

And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante

Hi Folks, I'm a new guy over here, but you all seem very nice and knowledgeable. I'm actually one of the moderators over at the Guitargeek.com forum, and before I knew your site existed we started dissecting John's BSSM Recording Rig. If anyone is interested, here's a link, I think you have to login to see the picture attachments though.

If anyone is able to contribute/confirm, it would be most appreciated. There are still a few things we are shaky on.

Thanks,
Jake

Just never get a WH10V2 and you're alright. Thing kills the clean signal and doesn't quite nail the WH10 sound. Doubt Frusciante would use one if he ran out of WH10's. Get a Dime wahwah instead, that baby's got killer sound.

Thanks for the suggestion... I'm not trying to recreate his tone as much as I'm just trying to accurately document what was used. For example, as you might read in that thread, many people refused to believe that he would have used the DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus on the actual recording. Why? Well that would be plain old gear snobbyness/elitism that has become rampant across the internet. The Boss CE-1 is also just what the community was used to him using. Anyway, I'm just striving for accurate documentation.

Also Chili_Pat, I'm wondering if you have any source for the following information?

"John broke his CE-1 in the early 90's..."

I'm not doubting it, it makes perfect sense, just wanted to see if we could confirm that. Thanks!
