Do you REALLY need a halfstack? I think the same way very long but I don't believe that this is necessary. I got very good results with the Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 401 Combo and I play very much stuff of Frusciante.

But back to the halfstack-thing: Marshall JCM 2000 50 or 100 watt head. Really sweet tone and John used it in 2001 as backup-amp ;) And I know why! A really good amp, like it!

Try out the Marshall Haze 15, it has more than enough power to play at home and jam with.

"Well, it was put to me by "that guy" when I was, like, four. So I went into my parents' record collection and found a rock'n'roll compilation. And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante

I was leaning towards A JCM800 But the JCM2000 Sounds Nice , is there a difference in sound between a 1960a or 1960b ?

Some advice I can offer:

You should always play through the amp first with YOUR guitar and YOUR pedals.

If you want a good half stack, go for a handwired if you can afford it. (1959 HW or the JTM45 models) However these are f*ck off loud amps!!! The tone however, is to die for.
From a working musicians point of view I can tell you half stack is NOT practical for most gigs/studios etc.

Any tube Marshall combo will do fine for the sound you're after.

haha, woah!
thats a little overkill unless you have your own techies to setup for you at your shows...
I play through a Marshall JCM2000 TSL 112 and it sounds amazing through the PA at my church.
I'm playin a players deluxe sunburst MIM strat, which comes with vintage noiseless pickups, Ibanez Sonic Distortion, Handbuilt WH10, and EHX MemoryMan w/ Hazari. I can get Frusciante sounding tone quiet easily. Still you won't ever have his exact tone ever. He's just got too much vintage gear.

That's for a practice amp?!?! That's what a Marshall Haze or a Blackstar HT-5 is for!!!

Apparently you're some sorta rich guy... heh.
The only thing about having such a massive amp is you won't be able to get the full tube saturation sound without cranking it.
You'll be using like 5% of that amps true ability

To take advantage of an amp like this...should you crank the master volume first, then the channel volume. Or the other way around?

Personally, I love my Blackstar HT-5, but I find myself recommending a Vox VT-15 to people far more often. You get more bang for your buck with the Vox VT-15, I feel. (Especially when you play with those different amp models.) I know it's not a tube amp, but it still makes a beautiful sound. (And the Blackstar HT-5 actually uses a solid-state preamp, so I guess that's technically a hybrid as well.)

$150 Vox VT-15. Try it before buying a tube amp
$500 Blackstar HT-5. Try it before buying anything else tube. Think smaller Marshall Haze.

Peavey Mini Colossal if you can find one for a good price. It'll teach you to rely on what you've already get to get different sounds (pick attack, vol. control, different pickup selections etc.)
