Here's the vid, I'm sure a lot of you have seen it before, you can watch the whole thing on Youtube, its basically John talking about different techniques and stuff:
Anyway, at 0:19 when he is doing the open string legato thing, does anyone have a clue how or what he is doing? or what notes are being played? how many strings is he using, etc?
I cant tell much from the video , It just sounds really amazing and like a good technique to learn, Im willing to put in a lot of practice for it
Thanks!
Edit: I think its also what he is doing in this vid from 2:37 ish to 2:57:
It's kinda hard for me to explain in words but I'll try.
To learn this technique I'd try to play two notes on the e string and every third note would be the open e string. For example g, e, e (15th fret, 12th fret, open e string). hold down the e string with your ring finger on the 15th fret (g) and pick it. then pull off the ring finger. while pulling off the ring finger you already have to hold down the e string on the 12th fret (e) with your index finger. then pull off the index finger and let the open e string ring. then repeat the same over and over (just pick the first g note!). and don't forget to start really slow!
Thanks for the replies, its helped a bit, I can sort of do it now, not as fast as john though. I guess ill just have to keep at it.
The thing is though, I thought he was using his index, ring finger AND pinky, hammering/pulling with all 3, because in the video it looks like all of his fingers are moving??? he's just hammering with 2 fingers at a time? (im guessing mainly his index and ring finger, and using his index and pinky to reach further frets?)
Nevertheless, even just hammering two fingers at a time, the 5 fret stretch at 0:28 is a beast.
I think this is easier than it looks, I am not a good guitarist by any stretch of the imagination but I find that to help this kind of thing the end part of the Dani California solo helps as it is fast but all the positions are relatively close together and this can help you increase your speed. Also 'Don't forget me' helps the hammering on skill if you want to learn that and most live versions of this song have awesome examples of John's soloing and the skill your describing.

Thanks again!
sometimes he's using two, sometimes three. sometimes he's picking only every third note, sometimes every note and some more variations

watching the video manituo posted it almost looks like a tapping technique
no tapping in this vid. he's tapping in "don't forget me". it's possible to play the riff just with hammer on/pull offs, but with tapping it's easier.

those hammer on/pull off riffs are easier than they look yeah . but the dani california licks include hammer on/pull offs and bendings, which isn't that easy to do. (haven't seen a good cover version by someone on youtube ) a good cover of the lick is at 3:57 in this video

He also use this technique here from 5:25 to 5.47.
Check it out. Its not so difficoult and it sound amazing. You can also play special notes with your right hand to add some and power into some notes.
pretty amazing almost the whole chorzow show is on youtube! how did this person get those videos (that you can't see on the TV version)? The unaired drum jam you can find on chad smith's "eastern rim" DVD but the end jams?
i realize its not tapping, i can see his picking hand...but its like..half tapping. haha
its a pretty easy technique, i mastered it today after i read this thread...but the three finger hammeron and pulloff is still a little tricky because my pinky is a weakling
Awesome find, Stratopasta! I never noticed this before...
I'll have to try it out.
It's fun to type like Red Strat.
We need a new forum for "technique"... this is good stuff to know.
/me just killed any plans Iva had for the evening. Sorry!
"Take that fucking sign down." -John Frusciante
"Well, it was put to me by "that guy" when I was, like, four. So I went into my parents' record collection and found a rock'n'roll compilation. And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante
Ok I thought I had it but I realize now I really dont lol

That's been the best help so far, however I don't think that john is picking the first pulloff note like you said, I think he is starting by picking the index finger note, then he hammers on with either his ring finger or pinky, pulls off back to the index finger and then pull his index off to the open string? I hope im making sense?
Also I think john is only hammering with one finger at a time, he isn't using multiple finger hammer ons, he's either using his index and ring finger or index and pinky (im pretty sure im right with this part tbh)
Is there like a video on youtube of someone going through this or something similar? its like sometimes I can do it slightly similar but only when my fingers are light/relaxed and free flowing. I think a lil more explaining would be appreciated by everyone trying to get this technique down
