In response to the elitist canonical lists of greatest guitarists that privilege only the earliest guitar greats, BBC 6 Music are running a poll to determine who is the greatest axeman of the last 30 years. Naturally, the nominee list is exhaustive and is entirely based on subjective opinion. But I encourage members of this group to recognise the genius of one in particular...John Anthony Frusciante.
Former axeman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a solo artist with 10 albums and numerous EPs to his name, Frusciante is also an extremely capable singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist (bass, keyboard, synthesiser, etc.) But in terms of his guitar skills, Frusciante is possibly the closest thing to Hendrix of the last 30 years. Of course, it is not vitruosity which defines him as a guitarist but the emotion. Every note, chord, bend, slide, whammy and wah-wah he plays carries with them as much feeling as the man who created them - if his orgasmic facial expressions are not a marker of this, I don't know what is! Plus, he even defined his own sound through the raw power of his strumming and the nakedness of his guitar tone (one which resonates when played clean or distorted ). But don't take my word for it... take a look at some of the video links and see for yourself. They are the closest thing to experiencing the real thing which - I am sad to say - may be a rarity now that he has left the Peppers and rarely makes solo appearances live.
Any hardcore Frusciante fans, by all means...vote, coz we know how important his work is to us and to the world of music. But for any newcomers, take some time to consider what makes him the greatest guitarist of the last 30 years and, indeed, one of the greatest musicians of all time. And when you realise that...VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

It's not fair for me to vote for Frusciante if Omar Rodriguez, Kevin Shields and Jonny Greenwood are on the list too. The list is just to good to choose just one

Yeah..like in my case - Cobain. Though I know that John is much better as a guitar player, I think Cobain will always be my hero

It's on the frontpage of the BBC 6 Music website. Here's the link to the article...

There's also link in there to the full poll rundown (percentages and everything)...course it's on the same page as the original link (http://www.bbc.co.uk...ts/theaxefactor).
Thanks a bunch to everyone who voted. It was the right result!

I'm so happy
that we showed him.... or them.... that we exist. Us Frusciante fans.
I'm getting sick of everyone knowing about Slash but not about John. Sure I'm a bit of a slash fan myself but I'm getting tired of him.... so tired. Fecking hat.

And I've never been very smart.
