It's hard to be sure the exact pedal he's using on that, but judging by the period in which it was recorded I would not say that it's a FF. I think he didn't use anything other than a big muff or boss FZ-3 for fuzz up until stadium arcadium.

The one thing that I'm almost 100% sure of is that this was recorded without an amp, that is to say, straight to a recorder, preamp, or console. And to be honest my ears are telling me that he just overloaded the input preamp to get distortion. I have a smll home studio and Sometimes expriment with plugging my guitar straight in and overdriving the hell out of the preamp, it kinda sounds like this, not a lot of sustain, and a little shrill.

To sum up, I'd say its either:

-preamp overdrive
-John's DS-2 plugged straight into the console

It doesnt sound too much like a fuzz to me.

Hope that helps.

Yea I thought of that too, but something just pushed me to think it was a FF.. I think it can make a tone pretty close to it..

Atleast you know that fuzzed out chorus tone John often use in his really depressing tunes? I can get that with a FF into a CE-1 even without the CE-1 is getting overloaded :)
