Its my belief that music litterly is a vibration of the universe that causes through symbols of sounds a meaning in our sub-concious one deeper than we can begin to comprehend.

I believe that good music is good music and bad is bad. The things that make it good & bad are much more to with intentions. The thing that makes music great is how well it reflects that intention which either comes through forces internally or externaly.

Music means to me everything and nothing. The only thing that interests me is music however it could be argued that i spend my time sitting doing nothing. I listen to around 40albums a week and its become my best friend something that i always have and always have more to do and hear in.

With the godsend of recordings in the form of cd's ect much has been attached to music that is nothing to do with it i.e fashion, money ect
while these things affect the music made they still hold little place in the grand scheme of things

i have never read a music magazine or intentionally listened to the radio,
the internet particually utube and IM (thanks iva:D) has allowed me to discover a world rich in quality and beauty

Quite simply through apparent randomness and feeling an urge to buy from amazon.com a copy of curtains by some guy called john frusciante (who i had no idea who he was or what he sounded like) apart from rhcp's californication, by the way, SA, it has changed my life and i looked forward to life with and around music.......

To me, music is largely a form of escapism. Most of the time I have headphones on, which people often see as ignorance, and that I'm withdrawn from the society I'm in. To an extent, they are right; if I really don't want to be where I am and don't want to associate with the majority of people I'm surrounded by, the headphones go on. So, music offers a chance to get out of where I am; while still remaining there physically.

Don't think I'm some kind of hermit, who is completely socially inept, because I'm not, nor am I completely unhappy; but it's partly attributed to music that I'm not unhappy.

All of that is very selfish, in that I need music as a form of medication.

I use music as a way to learn about music itself, as I do try to write songs myself. And, out of an interest for what each artist has to say about the world in general.

As for the sound itself, I think that is purely subjective; that is, based on one's viewpoints about life. To the scientific mind, it's the vibrations traveling through the ears and our brain's interpretation of that. To a spiritual mind, it could be the language of the universe, made by spirits; or the thing that links this dimension to others.

The latter stikes a chord with me.

Note: I actually asked this question myself not too long ago on Yahoo Answers, and got some good replies, click here to see.

As the 'Best Answer' says, music is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

The language of the universe concept strikes a chord with me too. I see music as a powerful unifying force..that in concert, draws large numbers of people of diverse ages and backgrounds together in a very positive way..that speaks to them, and enables them to communicate with each other, in a common language.

As you said, on an individual level, you can put your headphones on and music can transport you to another place...a place that is at once escapist, therapeutic and magical. I find it doesn't matter what kind of music I'm listening to either. I can get to this same place at a classical music recital, with just a solo piano being played, just by closing my eyes. Likewise before and after work, I can crank the volume up in my car and lift my spirits in a way that is both soothing and uplifting...It's a special force of good in the world and I cannot imagine living without it..to me it is colour and emotion represented in sound : )

...funny that you say that! Exposure to more music than ever in the last two years lead me to missing math, physics and chemistry; which I haven't touched in nine years now.

That said, I'd probably call music a fusion of art, science and expression in general.

music, to me, (at least when you set out to listen to a certain song) is a way to comfort myself. (so definitely escapism.) if a song is depressed-sounding, it usually gives me comfort, which kind of seemed counterintuitive to me at first. i've realized that it's just feeling comfort for being able to relate to someone else's expressed mood (song in this case, but also true to any expression).

so i have this friend who is completely down on himself. he is heading into a situation he feels no hope for. he is basically hopeless, causing him to be reckless, and i can't stand to see hear him not care about his life like this. the thing is i know he has so much to be happy for, and he just doesn't see it right now. anyway, i'd a appreciate some JF song suggestions as i trust John's music more than any other artist's. i'm interested in what you guys suggest because i can't think of the right song, as i'm in a very hopeful mindstate at this point.

thanks in advance!

When you say vibration of the universe, what do you mean ? Universe can be just space around us, or some place that contains all our thoughts and our subconscious, even our imagination... I heard that definition many times and im sure that for some people universe is material world and for others it is something else...

Well i don't think there really is an absolute definition of the universe, i guess what i meant by that was everything that is in existance as one entity if that makes sence. When i said vibration i meant that litterly as in the actually physical process of music vibrating space. By the way that isn't the entirity of my view and its a view that constantly changes and has changed and expanded since i first posted this topic.

To me music is like a verbal, mental picture...but only if it's good music.
When I listen to music that I don't like, I can't invision or feel anything.
When I listen to good music, it just takes me somewhere else, as it does with most people. You can see new horizons and feel things that you may have never experienced before. Indeed, music is what feelings sound like. Music is also what colors sound like or what tastes sound like.
Eargasm.
