You can work out what key it is, by the chords that are being played or if you know the solo what position it is being played.
Also try solo over the top changing keys untill it sounds right. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

There is something I never quite got though. Although I may be playing on a C major pentatonic scale, the song can be on A minor. Why is that?

Animal Bar - G major Isn't it A major?
Around The World - Verse/Chorus - G dorian Bass riff is in E minor, I am fairly sure, and ending is in some kind of D minor
Funky Monks - G dorian Is the guitar solo in G, too?
Otherside - E minor Except for the bridge thingy (which is in E minor), this one is in A minor
Scar Tissue - D minor Solos are in D minor for sure, verse/chorus part I think are more F majory
Tell Me Baby - E minor This one is in A minor
The Power of Equality - D minor I think this one is in D# minor? Not sure thou, the tuning is fairly weird I seem to recall

Really good list you made! Made some comments thou, some confused me.

Does anyone know what key the Sir Psycho Sexy outro is?
I got the chords but I can't find the key, I tried but it didn't work
Now that the day has come.
I see myself as everyone.
I am what's all around me
No, nothing it just cannot be. Feeling has come from the sun.
Like most everything and everyone

What seems lost is free from the force that slowly destroys us.
And kills all matter off

Well, we don't control the chance that plays with us.
And we get existence back by hurting others.
And when we go the other way it's ourselves we hurt.
But who pushes on through eventually will see

Every moments first.
Every moment is first.
What's gone will never come back.
But it exists when you think of it
And what is anything, anyway.
But a series of things running through your brain.
All of the fucked things you do

Are the product of whats happened to you.
Whatever you create from love. Is a gift from the place which some call above

There's only the forces of hate and love.
One breaks things down and one builds them up.

I'm going to give it a go based purely on theory. It's best to start off by saying that simply stamping a single blanket key on this outro won't work - it hops around and there are probably a few different ways to define what actually happens. Here is my idea...

The rest of the song is based around E minor (especially established in the verses with the use of Em7 and Em9 chords). And seeing as the outro begins on Em, it first sounds like it's gonna carry on in the same vein, but that changes quite quickly. Here are the chords of the outro:

Em Eb Bb D Ab Eb Cm Ab G

And here is the natural Em scale: E, F sharp, G, A, B, C, D... So the only chords used which conform to this scale are Em, D and G.

However, using an Eb minor scale (Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D) a lot more of the chords will fit - Eb, Bb, Ab, and C minor all belong here.

So the outro appears to hover between Em and Ebm - a very difficult compositional idea to pull off - but Frusciante achieves this by ordering the cycle of chords in such a way that some have something in common with the last. For example, the chords Bb and D both share the notes D and F even though they belong to different keys. Same goes for G and Em which both share notes G and B. There are also interesting pairings which recur:

Em to Eb is a semitone shift downwards. So is Ab to G.
Eb to Bb is a strong 4th/5th interval. So is Ab to Eb.
Bb to D is a 3rd/6th so is Eb to Cm and and G to Em.

It's a very beautiful outro and organised in a perfect and strange way. I'm sure there are other theoretical ways to explain what happens but these are my thoughts.

I always thought the chords were Em, Eb, Bb, D, Ab, Cm, Ab, G and that you play the first Ab twice
It sounds like that in the master track.
But thanks anyway, I'll spend alot of precious time analyzing this and using it in improv. :P
This helps ALOT, thank you!!!!

Edit:quick question: Isn't the D chord in both the Em key and EbMajor key a diminished chord, how does it work then?
And I think you mixed up the Eb Minor and the EbMajor scale
The Eb Minor scale would be Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Eb (I think, it's relative to the G Major scale) The Eb Major scale is Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D, Eb
So Em and EbM, do they have something in common?
Those scales both share the notes G, C and D.
And another weird thing: in the EMinorScale you have the chords GMajor and CMajor and in the EbMajorScale you have the corhds GMinorand CMinor so it's reversed. That seems like an idea JF would come up with.

Sorry if I seem like a wiseass, answering my own questions :P

One More of Me: Apologies my friend, you're completely right. I meant Eb Major - not minor.

It could also be C minor which has the same key signature - The harmonic version of C minor, which raises the Bb to B, would allow G major to be included in that key. That would explain G being the last chord in the cycle - belonging to both, it acts as a gateway between E minor and C minor.
Nice job with your analysis. Together I think maybe we're slowly getting closer to working it out Posted Image

bucilevi: I'm not sure what you're asking. Both things you wrote are true. E minor and A dorian have the same key signature. So do C major and A minor. What's the question?

Thanks! :)
It would really help me if we could analyse this beautiful outro detailed, that would be cool!
First I need to get my Melodic Minor and Harmonic scales sorted out though...and maybe my modes too if we want this to work.
'Cause if I look at how detailed you do it, I might need some more study :P
