for anything chili peppers i actually like to use mode 1 on the ds-2, with distortion around 9 oclock, tone around 2 oclock, and level around 5 or 6

for thicker solos i might run the distortion up to 2 or 3, but for a regular solos and for use with the wh-10 i like less

unless im running it through a cranked amp the turbo mode just sounds too boxy. mode 1 is clearer, more articulate, and cuts better than the muddled turbo mode sound.

The ultimacy may have been exaggerated. (This is Post #25, by the way.)
"Take that fucking sign down." -John Frusciante

"Well, it was put to me by "that guy" when I was, like, four. So I went into my parents' record collection and found a rock'n'roll compilation. And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante

I'm wondering, during a lot of live performances John uses a fuzz pedal I believe for solos.
A couple good examples of the sound I'm after would be in this dani california video...

this don't forget me video...

or this scar tissue video...

I just wanna know which pedals he's using for them, obviously he's got his wah goin, i'm more interested in whether or not he's using the big muff pi, or english muff'n, ds -2, etc.
Let me know, thanks!

This is less of a real-gear thing and more of a here's-how-you-fake-it sorta deal.

If you're looking for Frusciante's specific gear on a song, yeah, just go ahead & make your own thread if you like. If you're just looking for the sort of feel to copy-cat it, this'd be the place. It's alright to ask questions here, I just don't want it to turn into an authentic-Frusciante-gear configuration thread or whatever because then we get discussions about which color wah pedal he used, and that's really not the idea here.

As far as fuzz goes, his live fuzz definitely sounds a little sharper and crunchier, so I'm gonna have to agree a0n09. Sounds a lot like some kind of a Germanium fuzz.
