Would this be a good starter amp?

i like marshall hazes. they're pretty cheap tube amps with a decent marshall sound. you wont quite get that vintage marshall sound, but you'll def get some nice warm tube tones.

for the money though, I would check out any of fender's blues junior combo amps. or, for about $50 more you could get the fender blues deluxe reissue. these amps put out much better clean strat tones IMO

Well I've got a Telecaster. I went to Guitar Center today to play around with it a little bit...i wasn't really all that enthralled with the Fender's though.

some people think the fender tones are a too bright, and sometimes they are. but i think they're more articulate amps, and thats a good thing, sometimes.

did you get to try a haze? what did you think?

What about a Vox AC15/30? The AC15 is $100 cheaper than the Marshall, and personally i think it's a great amp. I don't own it myself, but I've tried it myself and it has some really good tones. I ordered it today and can't wait to get too my house :D Dunno about gigs though

The Vox AC15/30 have insane brightness sound issues due the bright cap. It's makes the amp react less well with overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals and brightens up the sound a lot. You can easily mod it, you just need to take out one little tiny capacitor. And if you would do so:

IT'S AN AWESOME AMP

I know ;) I haven't noticed any problems with it when i tried it though but a mod may be tempting after some time. I've got a great tutorial site for those who are interested:

I just got the Fender super champ, tube plus effects, 15 w, enough noise for my own FOH (i.e.,living room), small enough to move, good price and it's still a tube amp. The effects are fun!!!!! Watch for it on sale..

I think when you play music like RHCP, amps as the Nighttrain and Tiny Terror would also do well for gigs

Go with that Haze and don't look back. It's quite the entry-level Marshall valve amp.

If you're just starting to play, you might want something cheaper ($100-200 range)
"Take that fucking sign down." -John Frusciante

"Well, it was put to me by "that guy" when I was, like, four. So I went into my parents' record collection and found a rock'n'roll compilation. And when my mom asked if I wanted to move to L.A., I said, "Yeah," because I knew that was where the rock stars were. I was seven. Then when I found punk and listened to the Germs, I started seeing how I was part of this. I remember being out on the baseball field when I was 11, and I felt like such an outsider. Standing there in right field, I started making up an angry punk song in my head, and I went home and wrote, like, 20 songs in a row. I realized it didn't even matter if I knew how to play guitar yet." -John Frusciante

Defo +1 For the super champ xd! its a beast and is defo loud enough for small gigs, and can always be miced up! Awesome tones at any volumes!
But for a bigger stage amp the haze is a good choice!
