I just bought Nirvana's debut Bleach special edition, with a 50 page photo booklet. And just looking at the pictures got me thinking a bit more about the whole grunge scene in Seattle. I was just a baby/child when grunge was at it's peak. What do you think about all of it, and are there any good stories or experiences you want to share about those days?

I CAN'T STAND IT.
why? my mum loved grunge. nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, etc. loved it. i know all their songs. my soundtrack growing up was grunge. now, as a twenty-two year old girl who collects music like it's going out of style, i say FUCK nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, temple of the dog, alice in chains, etc.

interestingly the only bands i like that are associated with the "genre" have different sounds. the screaming trees and the melvins, for example. i mean, the melvins are sludge metal. i have no idea why they're linked to bands like nirvana.

it's probably safe to say i hate nirvana the most.

I have really been getting into "grunge" lately. I just watched the documentary, "Hype!," which taught me a lot about grunge that I never knew. There's a lot more to the scene than most people know. I especially love Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Temple of the Dog. I just saw Pearl Jam last month and they were incredible.

Check out "Hype!" if you get the chance:

Don't really know about the grunge "scene" (I only know bits and pieces of the other bands mentioned here), but I've always loved Nirvana...especially their Unplugged Live in NY dvd. : )

@JForsblade - that edition is awesome!! I was stunned! It's excelent! I loooove the live songs, they sound great; and the booklet..I was mesmerized. I'm planning to buy it because it's totally worth having it!

@pinkflag - unfortunately, all bands that appeard at that time were called "grunge". Screaming Trees and Melvins are great bands. I don't like that labeling because there are 4 bands that stood out - NIRVANA, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, and they are totally different!

@LBI Surf & Frumeister - Hype! is so great! :) And you can really learn about that whole scene by watching it. I like the part when a guy (I'm not sure who is he, haven't watched it for a while) shows tons of small pictures with "grunge" bands. I think there were literally hundreds and hundreds of pictures/bands.

@hope - <3

As for me, my favourite band is obviously NIRVANA ("has always been and always will until the end")! I like other bands: AiC, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney etc. (all except Pearl Jam), but I've always felt connected to NIRVANA/what Kurt was singing about and standing for. I don't wanna go into details now (it's for some other topic), but no band has had such an impact on me like NIRVANA. <3 I listen to some other genres of music (alternative rock, post rock, jazz, electro, etc.) but it always feels good to go back to my roots (grunge) from time to time. ;)

I like grunge, the same way I like punk...angry music makes me feel better.

And out of these big four, I prefer Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. In fact, those two are probably too metal for me.

I also like Hole. I don't care if Courtney is like this or like that, I don't care who actually wrote the songs, I just enjoy the music.

The one grunge band I was never able to get into is Bush.

Huh..Bush would be "post-grunge", they appeared a bit later..I don't like them either. And I also don't like The Smashing Pumpkins..I mean, they're ok, but I've never listened to them as much as I have all the other bands.
But Hole..somehow I forgot them :( They were great! Don't know if you've heard, but they will release another album in 2010! ;)

Yeah, I really love it. Total raw sound, and punk attitude. It's great because it's the Seattle sound before it was even popular worldwide.

Personally, I think the "grunge" label is kind of silly because all of the bands that are called "grunge" sound so much different. To me it's more of a name for a scene than a genre.

I agree with you... For example, Alice In Chains sounds more metal, while Pearl Jam is like hard rock. It's just referring to the bands from Seattle. Although people like to call Nirvana's music as grunge, which makes sense, being as it's like punk, with other influences. Of course, music isn't about the genre, just the music its self.

I'll take that as a no. Strange, I thought there were loads of Nirvana fans here.

I really love Nirvana, but I guess I can't call myself a fan. I enjoy listening to Nirvana MTV Unplugged. I guess besides John/RHCP it is the album I listen to most often as I am very selective if it gets to listening music. It depends on my moods so much. But Nirvana is something universal for my moods.
I still remember when I first heard something from MTV Unplugged. It was Where Did You Sleep Last Night. And I was driving in my brothers car and wondering about this song that really got me. Then for some time it was the only song I listened to... I appreciate Nirvana's music but I just can't compare myself to the fans and I feel myself really stupid while talking about Nirvana as I like them more than I have listened to them for some reason.

I was a small child too in the Grunge hey-day. If only I could've been born 15 years earlier...

But I love grunge, the dirty riffs, the throaty singing style and the rawer sound compared to the rock on the radio these days.

I remember the first time I listened to Pearl Jam's 10 properly and getting bummed out because the sound/style I was going for on my guitar was pretty much exactly what I heard on that album. haha.

I was in my early twenties and playing music full-time when grunge hit. I liked Nirvana back in the day (although my interest in them died, totally, about a dozen years ago), Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Superunknown was the first CD I ever bought (before that it was cassettes). I never liked Pearl Jam. I still like AIC but their older stuff mostly depresses me, as does Nirvana. When someone dies of suicide or a slow suicide like Layne Staley's death essentially was, their music after that is tainted for me--call it bad energy. I like the Foo Fighters and the new AIC album as well as Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff, especially the extended double-CD of Degradation Trip. I like Chris Cornell's first solo album, the second a little, but the third one is pop garbage (I hear he is remixing it for a more rock sound after a dismal reception)... but I am slowly steering off-topic.

I agree that it is funny how many bands were lumped into the grunge label. Queensryche are a Seattle-based band, but they weren't lumped in; it seems almost every other Seattle-based band was.

I don't care for grunge anymore. I suppose I outgrew it musically, especially since it was a definitively narrow window in music, more like a clique, looking back on it now, than anything else.

Kurt Cobain was pretty much the Melvin's roadie early on and later produced the Melvin's album Houdini.
