Hi,

I cant sing, im terrible.

I was hanging out with two friends last night and both of them can sing VERY well. They tried to teach me and I did two excercises with them:

Singing from my belly instead of my throat. They showed me the difference from singing from their throat instead of their belly, and shit.. the difference was HUGE. So I have decided I need to learn that, but I dont know how. When he showed me the difference from singing from the belly and throat I realized that I have never singed or talked from my belly before in my whole life, so I have no idea how to do it, and they didnt have a good explanation of how they did it themselves. I have heard about singing from your belly before and I thoght I knew how to do it, but I found out that when I thought that I was singing fro my belly, I was still singing from my throat.

Second excercise was to sing in the same key as the note on the guitar. I was terrible at that too. They had to guide me as I was trying to find the right key. I also learned that you have to sing in a specific key regarding to the song you are playing, and that you can change the key by putting a capo or tuning down the guitar, I HAD NO IDEA OF THIS. I usually dont sing much because it sounds so bad, but now I know why im so horrible.

So now I'm turning to you guys for help. How can I learn to do both these things? how can I learn to sing better?

You shouldn't expect to get it in one night.

Do you drive a car? Best time to practice is while driving, listening to albums. Also, you should learn to strum chords on the guitar, because singing while you strum is a good way to train your voice. Also, recording yourself is helpful too.

As for the belly thing, just keep singing in a way that feels natural to you, improve at that, and then the whole belly thing will eventually make sense, you just have to get some experience. Singing from the belly won't make much sense until you get familiar with your throat, so just start singing all the time.

Thanks for the advice, I do play guitar and I can sing songs while playing, if thats what you mean. I just havent bothered to sing while im playing the guitar because it sounds so bad lol :)

Im just gonna start singing alot more and I'll probably improve after a while, hopefully.

Cheers.

you could start singing in a choir :)

that's a great way, because you are part of something that sounds much better than you alone would be able to create, you are not embarrassed because there are a lot of people singing at the same time and you start training your voice, to strike the right note etc.

try it!!!

I'm the slime oozin' out, from your TV set...

Seconded! The best way to get a relationship with pitch and harmony and your voice. You really have to listen.

Some other things: Play scales on the guitar, and sing every note along with it. Did you say you had trouble with this? Restrict yourself to 4 notes. Sing along to playing them up and down, and then make melodies out of the 4 notes and sing them as you go.

Learn solfa (do re mi)

Learn how to sing along to songs and then sing them without the music playing ... it's amazing how much you will forget after the music stops. It's really helpful though, to eventually learn it and match all the notes.

What I found with guitar, and the same applies for the voice is to sing what you think the note will sound like. Then you train your ear as well. I did the same thing with bending on the guitar (playing an ionian mode as its easy to know when your right or wrong) and i think this of better benefit than learning licks riffs or songs! But keep singing like anything practice practice practice and you'll get there!
