Hi all, I'm interested about your views as fans of John, as to what style of music of his you like most. As we all know, he has adopted many different ways of making music; from the intricate, complex layered and electronica based albums such as TROWFTD and ASITHOS to the back-to-basics acoustic work featured on Curtains and the earlier work. Myself, I love both but as with all music, my mood is suited to the style; recently, I've been very much focused on the electronica side.

I agree with Martin, but I also agree with you [=The Past Recedes] that it often depends on my mood..each album has its story and its style..

It is extremely difficult to top the style and talent put into Niandra LaDes. It is a remarkable work of art which has been at the top of my list since I have started to listen to JF's solo work. I have never heard anything like the things I hear on this album, which makes it special to me and probably to a lot of others. On a side note, if anyone knows of anything that sounds similar to or has shared qualities of this album, please let me know, as I would be very interested to hear it.

I appreciate all the styles, but maybe electronica and lo-fi just a little less in general.

i go through phases with what i like best. I was thinking though that one time period stood out and i sort of miss the style he had and that was during the By The Way tour.
I saw RHCP during that tour at Jones beach and brought a friend with me. He described that concert as, "it was like jesus descended to the stage and started playing guitar, I was laughing so hard at that comment. His guitar style had this perfect mix of the simplicity from Californication and a touch of the balls out lead but it was so personal sounding and he looked soooooo goddamn happy to be playing. I mean the intro to Slane Castle video really showcases that.

Also to support the Niandra Lades and usually just a t-shirt, I was like crack head when that came out i was obsessed with it so I can understand wanting more of that.

It's really hard to tell which album/style I like best but I guess it depends on my mood and the time of day in my case too :P

Just like everyone here, depends on my mood. But since jamming along the first three songs of ASITHOS and Performance 2 just yesterday, I'm quite into his electronical stuff :)

I usually don't have the nerves for the first album and the screaming half of the second one and TROWFTD and The Empyrean would be two I like the most. But 100 people, 100 variations on the topic. :)

Yeah, it's so hard to decide what part of his music I like most, coz he hasn't really made a 'not-very-good' album, which is quite an acheivement for someone who's released 10 albums! Usually whenever I'm listening to one of his album's I always think 'right, this is my favourite one', then I put on another one and think 'no, this is my favourite', so I don't think I'll ever know which side of his music I like best!

I gotta say The Emperyan really impressed me. It showed a huge amount of development in his arranging and songwriting. All the different vocal styles and guitar solos showed real evolution.

I'm really excited to hear what he comes up with next!

By far Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt with Smile From The Streets You Hold a close second. His Blood Sugar Sex Magik work is just unparalleled in all respects; there's a reason why nearly every critic on this planet considers it to be their best album--not to mention many fans. His By the Way-era philosophies and playing style is definitely my second favorite. The way he approached guitar during the early 2000's was simply amazing; it was so beautiful and post-punk/New Wave-inspired.

It usually depends on my mood, I seem to rotate between them all. I think I probably listen to SCWP the most, I almost always go back to that one. It was also the first one I bought and what I was listening to when I really fell in love with his music. It always takes me back to that time.

Also, parts of Niandra really blow my mind. I used to listen to it every night when I was going to sleep.

I agree, but wanted to comment on a particular album that I listened to at a very specific time of day, namely 7am this morning.

It is a 20 minute drive from my home to work and I didn't really feel like going coz it was cold and early on a Saturday morning.
Anyhow, I grabbed DC-EP on my way out the door as it goes for about 20 mins and I hadn't listened to it for a while.

I'm glad I did because it reminded my about how much I really love this record. For one thing, it contains the songs "goals" and "repeating",
which are two of John's songs that I particularly like, both lyrically and musically.

In fact, "repeating" is one of my favourite songs in general, across all musical styles and artists. I'm not really good at analysing why exactly
coz it has more to do with feelings than thoughts. I love the overall sound of it though, and find both of these songs have a soothing and uplifting quality
to them. Listening to them certainly made me feel better this morning in any case...

Since his style is so.. different for each album he releases I can't really choose a favorite. I would have different answers everyday I think. Right now it's The Empyrean, but tomorrow maybe it'll be SCWP.

His work on blood sugar is so incredibly raw and funky. But I'm really in love with his stuff off Inside of Emptiness and The Will to Death. AW 1 and 2 I cant get enough of either.
