I want to share this funny moment I had today. It's RHCP\JF-related but too off-topic for the main forum. So...
We were at the seaside and I was jumping in order to get rid of the water in my ears. My mum said, "You should shake your head harder, otherwise it won't come out. Imagine you're at the rock concert. Come on, I'm the Red Hot Chili Peppers *imitates singing* aaaaahh aaaah! Jump and shake your head! I'm John Frusciante!"
It was very touching and hilarious at the same time.
That's amazing, I kind of envy you for having such a nice relationship with your mother!

Also I love your avatar, Flea looks so adorable.

Anyway, earlier today I was listening to John & Josh's A Sphere in the Heart of Silence on my iPod while lying on my bed and I fell asleep while listening to Communique. I can't really explain why, but it was AMAZING. Something about Josh's voice I think? Last time I fell asleep to a song and I could recall what it was after waking up was over a year ago (to Radiohead's Go To Sleep, I remember it vividly!) so it's not really something that happens a lot to me. So I'm curious, does it happen to you guys too? Or am I just stupid and/or weird?

Couple of days ago I fell asleep listening to Niandra and the Empyrean and it was incredible. Nothing distracted me from the music and it felt like there wasn't anything apart from the sound and the darkness (that good kind of darkness, not the scary one) and I think I've heard some bits I haven't noticed before. Like I was listening to the albums for the first time, they felt so different and real and unreal at the same time.

Life is so strange...in both good and bad way.

All I can say to people is: this won't make anything better or worse to you. Focus on those near you, someday they might need you more than you think.

Good luck in the army, Felix! I hope it's not longer than 1 year (unless you'll enjoy much the time you'll spent there)!

And I read this only today...:(

I have no idea how long military service lasts in Iran, but we'll be waiting for you to be back.

Just came back!

To answer your question, it lasts 18 months in general. The first 2 months are boot camp, as in, military training in a military facility with no outside world contact etc. Which I just finished (probably 2 of the worst months of my life).

Now the rest of the service depends on your education. If it's only up to high school or lower, then after a short break, you go back to wherever you were and continue serving as a normal soldier for the rest of your service. Which is absolutely dreadful.

In case you have went to university though, after the first 2 months they evaluate your degree and your performance in boot camp (they took several exams, plus discipline, shooting range score, ...) and assign you to an office job so you can use your education in serving the military (for free of course!).

Thankfully, I had went to university so I fall in the latter category. I am still waiting to see were I end up, but I know it will be in Tehran so that's a relief.

It feels weird being a normal person again, sleep schedule is fucked up and I have a lot of catching up to do, but I'm rather happy that the difficult part is over.

So, I guess you'll be spending a 16 months being free work force? We had that until military service was abolished last year, in favour of professional army; but for about 6-7 years before that, we had that as an option (regardless of one's education, though) and most young men were opting for it, citing that they were pacifists etc.

I'm glad that you don't have to leave home, welcome back. :)

Yeah free work force. I wish there was professional army here too, but I doubt they'd ever abolish the service in Iran.

Thank you :).

Well, we still have a part of territory (at least we say it's our territory) occupied, yet we abolished the service.

Then again, we're otherwise irrelevant. :P

If a part of your country was of undefined status, it wouldn't be that simple. Other than that, I agree with you

Yeah, that'd be great.

Haha, declining is a possibility, but when the law says you need to go to be considered a legal citizen, there's virtually no choice. Main motivation for me was getting a passport in order to leave the country, but you can't legally sign a work contract, get married and God knows how many other things if you haven't done your service!

That's one of the most insane things I've heard recently. Then again, it's supposedly one of the best-organised armies in the world.

Stupid question: are there civil ceremonies there or are all the weddings of religious nature?

I am not 100% sure, but I think religious marriages are the only ones legally recognized. Why do you ask, and why do you think it's a stupid question?
