Well I know everything about John Frusciante's past about guitar playing and drugs and stuff, but how did he learn to sing like that?
For some reason I can't imagine him taking voice lessons or something. And when did he actually decide that he wanted to sing?

Does anyone know more about it?

To put it simply: He is God.

i think your giving god too much credit there, comparing him to John.

He was in chorus when he was in elementary school (or early middle), but quit when he brought in Hendix's star spangled banner to sing to, and the teacher made a disgusted face, not thinking Jimi's version was music, or somethingto sing to. John was only in chorus for about a year, and this event caused him to quit.

That's all I know about his signing background, besides that his mother sang in a choir, probably giving him the same vocal range and inspiration to use falsettos a lot.

Hopefully I helped. :)

PS; Although I joke around sometimes and say "He is simply a god." to my friends, I would never mean in it a literal way, comparing him to a God or someone of a higher level or whatnot. I hope no one does that in the literal sense...

Yeah, I wouldn't really compare him to God. Just joking around there! :)

no, that was when he started taking guitar lessons. he brought in Hendrix's star spangled banner and the teacher refused to teach him how to do it...

Are you sure? In the Tell me Baby Making, the interviewer dude asked if he ever took music in school, and he told that story. It's not his chorus class?

I heard from a friend who is quite the reliable source, that he took lessons from the same vocal coach as bjork.

His singing on the new album is a bit different. His voice vibrates a lot more, like it does by thought singers. Maybe it's just 'cause he took his singing to another level, like he does with his guitar playing. Or maybe he really took lessons.

Way to go with editing others' quotes.  +1 !
Of course he's not God, I'm getting a bit sick of this weirdness. Especially in topics like this one, where it's PURE SPAM and it doesn't answer to the question asked. So, please, NO SPAM.

openparachute is right, John did take lessons with Björk's vocal coach. I'm trying to find the exact interview where he said that, but the search function is being a bitch today. Either that or it's in one of the articles that have not been typed out. :)

i think the vocal coach you're on about is Ron Anderson.
your voice is just another instrument, like the geetar. you have to work at it, otherwise you'll see no improvement. like other muscles, you have to work out your vocal cords to see results.
its a long process, and i know John has worked hard to improve his voice.

the only problem i have with johns voice now is that he treats it with effects too much. His voice is better than ever, but he clouds it up a lot more with treatments.
Sometimes its good, but I would like him to do a little less. An example is on Enough of me during the part where he sings: "If the seasons which change.." He has a treatment on it, but i think it would better if he left it untreated.

I think the same goes for his guitar playing too. Since by the way, he has become so effects happy. I sometimes wish he would go to that bare bones style he had during blood sugar and cali

His parents were both accomplished musicians, his mother was a singer; so he probably grew up listening to his mother and getting lessons from her.
"Frusciante was born in Queens, New York on March 5, 1970. His father, John Sr., was a Juilliard-trained pianist, and his mother Gail was a promising vocalist who gave up her career to be a stay-at-home mother."

Yes he has taken classes with Ron Anderson. Those who don't sing have no idea how hard it is to sing like he does for example on the Curtains album. It requires years of disciplined training of the voice. Another example on Unreachable, those high yells, are really controlled and smooth sounding yells that he can produce comfortably at will. An untrained "singer" try that, he/she will have pain and voice damage pretty soon, and not sound nearly as good.

I may be wrong, but am sure i read an interview where he said:

'The guy was really expensive, but one lesson with him and you sing so much better' or somethin like that!

Maybe i dreamt it lol
