What do you think about this song?

Frank settled down in the Valley, and he hung his wild years on a nail that he drove through his wife's forehead. He sold used office furniture out there on San Fernando Road and assumed a $30,000 loan at 15 1/4 % and put a down payment on a little two bedroom place. His wife was a spent piece of used jet trash Made good bloody-marys, kept her mouth shut most of the time, had a little Chihuahua named Carlos that had some kind of skin disease and was totally blind. They had a thoroughly modern kitchen; self-cleaning oven (the whole bit) Frank drove a little sedan. They were so happy. One night Frank was on his way home from work, stopped at the liquor store, picked up a couple of Mickey's Big Mouth’s. Drank 'em in the car on his way to the Shell station; he got a gallon of gas in a can. Drove home, doused everything in the house, torched it. Parked across the street laughing, watching it burn, all Halloween orange and chimney red. Frank put on a top forty station, got on the Hollywood Freeway headed North. Never could stand that dog.

Is he actually singing that low or are the vocals treated to sound lower? If he's really singing that low, then he must have the most incredible vocal range in history.

Also, the end with The Sonus Quartet (I gather) is awesome. Never would have expected that. I assume he composed that all by himself...?

as frusciante is not a soul black man singer and a huge fan of analog tape recording, for sure he's slowed this down and bounced it to a different player and recorded the rest over it. but i could always be wrong and he's got a little barry white in him lol.

Definitely. That is not natural John's voice. He slowed it down, but... But I can't get what for. John really is not a "soul black man", so I can't get why is he pretending to be like that.

He reminds me Isaac Hayes (RIP), who was singing and talking for Chef in South Park. :]

^^ I'm still undecided. Sometimes I listen to it and think that it's natural, and other times I think it can't possibly be.

Does anyone else laugh every time they listen to this song? Between the low vocals and that scream at 2:16, I can't help but chuckle :P

I really don't think there are any effects on the vocal track. Anyone can sing deep like that if they try, it just normally doesn't sound good. I think it sounds pretty good when John does it. At times you can hear that its just John's normal voice, and then he quickly goes back to the deep tone. I'm almost 100% sure that its not slowed down or anything.

I love it. With the way I'm seeing the story, I think the point of it is to indicate that he's successfully gotten "in-character" with this new persona he's put on, but there's a good chance nobody else will see it that way.

The lyrics to this song are some of the best I've ever heard.
When he yells, the vocal sound reminds me of the southpark rock music interlude singer.
with that said, I feel this track, and its sister track are 10/10 for me

Great lyrics, I love JF's voice (I think it's his) and the Quartet is simply amazing. Not enough good words to describe this wonderful song.

..."Because I am so small
and unseen by a man
doesn't mean I'm not here
dwelling on this land.
I see you there
Why can't you see me?
Maybe one day
when you learn to BELIEVE!"

That's the beauty of recording in analog, tape can be slowed down and it sounds natural because its the actual sound being slowed down, not some sort of complex algorithm being applied to it to shift the pitch down and weird digital modulation being heard through it. As for the part's when you hear John's normal voice, I personally believe it's because the slowed down tape is just getting into his normal singing range.

Haha, for sure, gets me every time, especially with the scream. Just another great thing about John, gives you all sorts of emotions listening to his music.

It's definitely different, but I totally dig it. I agree with the "in-character" thing. The song is appropriately titled "one more of me". Also, he did explain that it was one story told by TWO people from within one person. Call me crazy, but I would have to say that this would be the second person within the person.

I say just give it time, listen to it, it'll grow on you. There used to be stuff of John's that I didn't like at first, or didn't like at all that I absolutely love now. The album is amazing as a whole from beginning to end rather from skipping from track to track. Enjoy the whole story for what it is :)

And I apologize for the massive post haha.

I like the song very much, especially how he mixed in the quartet
I agree that the voice might be analog stretch and it sounds so great, the change of the voice throughout the album is great :)
the screaming is so cool and a bit funny, and it adds something to it

it is nice that he did this song and "its sister track" in a kind of contrast I like the idea a lot... still, not experienced enough to understand the whole story...
