So actually my main question is HOW DOES JOHN GET FAST MUTED NOTES ON THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG...??? No matter how I setup the delay on my amp I can't get it right... Maybe it is the amp built-in delay that makes the problem, but still....
Does anybody have a bigger pic of his Line6 DL4 pedal (clear enough to see the settings!)?
Don't Forget Megreat song, but let's talk about the guitar part...

I think a part of the magic in this song is he sets his delay as triplets when it is otherwise in 4/4 time. Such a John thing to do. You can tell this because when he 'counts himself' back in for the verse he hits the open e string as triplets and you hear no delay as he is in sync.
So if you count out the song
1.........2...........3................4........
...I'm a notion........In your bedroom
Then you need the delay to be eighth note triplets. So you will need to count it
1 23 2 23 3 23 4 23
As for repeats and level, the 1st repeat is nearly as loud as the original signal, and there are 2 repeats after that at a trailing volume. It sounds so great in the verse as he hits the e string as regular eighth notes - then their delays are at triplets away, so it sort of cascades together to form a stream of notes all mis-aligned at very small intervals apart.
He seems to stand near his pedal board at the beginning of the song, so he might 'tap tempo' the triplets in with his pedal in accordance with the tempo of fleas bassline. Or he could just have it set.

It's 'an ocean' not 'a notion'
HAHA, yeah, the first time I heard the song, I thought he said 'a notion' but after looking at the lyrics and listening to it again... it was 'an ocean'. That's a freaking good song... one of the best. But yeah, what surfsunadam said is actually perfect. That's what I would suggest.

He uses the Digitech PDS 1002 for the delay on DFM
and you wont find the settings of the dl4. They're only presets, which you can judge what they are by the sound only.
The knobs wont mean anything
