i read this post in another Forum (z.11 one...because i got a link from a friend)

Quote

For work I'm writing a series of articles around the subject of how beneficial music can be to mental health (playing, writing etc...) John was the first to agree. I spent a little over 3 hours on the phone to him the Saturday before last, and he was very friendly and insightful.

The interview is being written into an article at present and will be shown here:

http://www.hillingdonmind.org.uk/

We talked about the theraputic value of writing, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, The Beatles, a lot about meditation, about becoming a monk (or not now), the iPod shuffle function, and what true music is and the internal process involved.

John gave a little info on Empyrean. He wants people to listen to it with no influence from him. It is to be released on 20th Jan 08. That's from John's own mouth.

And it was a 61 Strat used for the solo of 'I Could Have Lied'. So my Jaguar theory was wrong..

I'm the slime oozin' out, from your TV set...

Thank you for the info. I am already excited: interview, new album. 3 hours on the phone, let's hope it's a long interview then. :D

Wow between this and the Horse Chronicels interview we are being spoiled! :D

I'm glad to see that John is coming out back into 'our world' again. As in doing interivews and stuff that we can see. Does that make sense or just sound stupid?!! :D

He wants people to listen to it with no influence from him.
What does that mean? That he doesn't want to push people into listening to it, or that he doesn't want us to listen to it with our opinion of him hanging over it beforehand?

Thank you for posting this! I am very excited to read the whole thing. And the fact that John would spend three hours of a Saturday night on the phone doing an interview about music is one of my favorite things about him.

Oh, and Fiona, you make complete sense :D

This monk thing is scary, as well as the no-influence thing. I seriously wonder what that is about.

And I'm looking forward to the rest.

I would say the whole wanting "people to listen to it with no influence from him" quite literly means that he wants people to listen to it and make up their own minds.

I am sure that he is aware that there are people out there who will take his word as gospil and so listen to the album and keep what he said in mind, rather than listening to it and then coming up with their own theories on the songs, etc.

That's all. So don't panic people!

As for the monk thing, well he mentioned that in the Q article when SA was coming out but I don't think he's ready to give up on the Chilis and the rest of his music yet. So once again I think we can restore the happiness vibes people! :D

I have to agree with this. In my opinion, I feel that he wants people to listen on their own terms and decide how they feel about it. It think it's a way to get feedback on a truthful, and sincere level and not by what others tell you to do or how to feel. I feel he is saying to us, "listen with an open mind and heart," and feel how deep the music goes and how it makes you feel inside out. Because music is a form of a healer to some people, as well as an expression of their love for the music and sounds itself. I'm very excited to hear his new album and I believe it will be the most beautiful album ever, with a sound so unique, it will surprise us all and blessing all in one! :D

I have a feeling Iva was scared of the monk thing in a different way.
It freaks me out too :D

i completely understand and respect the thing about listening to the record without any influence from him

and who cares about someone elses religion anyway. people can do whatever they want

and in a lot of ways there is a weird cult following for john out there

theres a difference between seeing him as an idol because of his music (which i do) and seeing him as some kind of god who his followers have to know every detail about his personal life. theres a HUGE difference... between admiring his musicianship and contemplating whether or not he should have kids and having (gossip) knowledge about his relationships

i doubt john would follow his idols that deeply

so you can see why he might not want to tell people stuff about the record because he KNOWS he will influence a LOT of people who take his opinions as fact and not as personal opinion

Yes, but that's a huge offense to us who DO think with our own heads.

its bad enough with the internet these days (which influences peoples opinions on music so much more). i guess he doesnt want to add to that

which i actually consider a really good logical way of thinking which i really understand (and i do think with my own head, not through someone elses)

So, you see?
He's uncomfortable with people doing anything for him that he didn't ask for. And I'm offended by that.

no thats what he wants people to do when listening to it. to just listen to it and discover yourself why you like it

its not disrepectful at all, its actually extremely positive. hes not implying people are stupid. hes just saying that he wants people to hear it without being influenced at all by what he thinks

its more suspensful this way as well. no complaints

Well, if so, let's hope you're right.
I don't appreciate positivity and optimism much, I think they're unreal approaches to the world...

he said a while ago that he has been avoiding talking about it because "its frustrating for people to hear about things that aren't out yet". i think theres nothing more to it than that, but yeah he doesnt want to tell us what he thinks about the music, he wants us all to be surprised by it. remember waiting from the end of '04 to may '06 for stadium arcadium to be released, and every couple of months one of the band members would say something about the album and the release date kept being pushed back and by the time it was released it was like "im not bovverred!" and the whole thing was really frustrating etc... :D i think he just doesnt want any of that... only -11 more months lol!

Greggg (Did I put enough Gs there?), this would make sense. And put me in a group of people who take everything way too wrong, but I've been in that particular group since the down of time, so that's nothing new.

With your observation (and catching up on sleep helped, too); I see that John is pretty aware of what the world is nowadays: a huge amount of people chew on their "obsessions" and want more and more and more and more. If so, then it makes sense. But if he mentioned 20th January four times, then I assume it would be a huge bummer for those who can't wait if it eventually turned out to be some other day.

I remember when Curtains was pushed back from 07th December 2004 to 24th January 2005. I thought: "Um, OK, printing error on the cover, we got so much this year, that's less than two months of wait..." but a bunch of other John followers were freaking hysterical as if it was the very end of the world.
