I have a new big muff, not a vintage one, and im have trouble with getting a decent sound. Im looking for a tone closer to johns than j mascis tone. j mascis sounds a little too dark with too much sustain. johns tone is brighter with more treble and attack. that could be attributed to other pedals, but i thought id start with the big muff, because that seems like the base of his solo tone. i know every big muff is different, but i thought id ask.

he doesn't use the muff live anymore but here is a pic of his live-settings...

i think it has a lot to do with the amp and the guitar and how the muff reacts but here you go:

What does he use live now instead of the big muff? For the distortion solo tone I mean. Is it the Boss Turbo Distortion? Or Amp distortion?

Mr. Maniac, could you post pictures as large as possible with the settings of his pedals? Especially delay, chorus and dist. It would be cool

And I think he uses DS2 for soloing...

the last thing he used instead of the big muff was a Electroharmonix English Muffin'. You can hear it also on the studio version of "Especially In Michigan"

Thanks, I recently got a Big Muff too for my dist and I wasn't quite sure what settings to use.
I use a strat and its a bit too dirty for me, all I want is a powerful really sustained tone. Maybe Ive just got it set too bright. But if I turn my distortion on my amp too I get a MAD smooth tone with a lot of the highs cut out and no fuzzyness, and it sustains FOREVER until it starts to feedback. If you play a chord it breaks up into a mess, but its so much fun for one note solos.

I also got a the FM4 Line 6 purple monstrosity, but it didnt come with a power source so im yet to experience its joys past the 20 mins I got out of the batteries it came with. I did find the Throw away your Television effect though!

And thats all John used in 2004? wow

hard to believe that John is such a minimalist concerning his solo-stuff if you look at this monster-effectboard.

my big muff with a squier sounds like a bad bad distortion, and with my ibanez sound like a fuzz pedal
