Hi all, since there's a lot of guitarists here, I thought you could probably help me with this. I'm a beginner, and by that I really mean a beginner. I've played The Past Recedes, Your Warning, The Real and In Relief, so yeah all with many basic chords. (Oh, I didn't do the solos of course..) What are some other songs by John that aren't too difficult to play? It doesn't have to be just chords, tabs are ok too (I actually prefer tabs, as long as they're not too hard for my level). You don't need to pay attention to the difficulty of the solos, I probably won't be able to play them now anyway.
Thanks!

You may want to look at his covers, too. A lot of them are very easy to play, like "How I can tell you" (4 simplest chords) or "For Emily, ...".

For me the easiest was Beginning Again. It may be a bit confusing to foind out the proper strumming, but trying more and more you'll find it.
Then I learned In Relief. Only difficulty here is F chord.
Also Jugband Blues (some difficult chords may be replaced with easier ones) that John covered.
Albums I listened to last week

I think Murderers would have frustrated me when I first started.

Goals would probably be pretty easy for you, I'm not sure if there are tabs/chords for it. If you can't find them I'll write it out.

Sorry to drop in like this, but one of the current projects for the site is compiling an accurate tabs section, so whenever you feel like tabbing, it would be just great. Welcome to the forum :D

Welcome to johnchile as well.

Another question.. I could only find the chords version for The Real, does anyone happen to have the tab version?

thiis song is only chord so i don't think there are a tab but the proper way to play the chords it's explained down

F#m Bm A E
I dont know the real from what i thought i saw
I cant remember where i went, where i was

F#m Bm A E F#m2x*

F#m Bm A E F#m
I'm gonna move toward a point in time
F#m Bm A E
Where where you are is a state of mind

Bm A E F#m Bm A E F#m
And anytime I can read your thoughts, Some of them yours and some I thought of

F#m E Dmaj7 F#m E Dmaj7
Theres no good reason for a heartbreak, nothing's repeating every Monday
F#m Bm A Dmaj7
Its no good saying you'll always be mine
F#m Bm A Dmaj7
These jokes life's playing they make me so tired so tired.
F#m Bm A Dmaj7
F#m Bm A Dmaj7

F#m E A E
It's already to much to always see you off
F#m E A E
The sense that hours go back is enough

F#m Bm A E F#m2x

F#m Bm A E F#m
I like to fade when I write this line
F#m Bm A E
There's every reason to paint a decline
Bm A E F#m
And every mile i walk is five
Bm A E F#m
I'll get where I'm going in the next life
F#m E Dmaj7
And all the while there's a false face
F#m E Dmaj7
This every killing is left untraced

F#m Bm A Dmaj7
This kind of falling saved my son
F#m Bm A Dmaj7
This constant longing for what's gone

F#m Bm A E
Whats gone

there's a tab
i made it;)

when you play the chords you have to play the first note alone like
likie this
this one it's F#m
---------------------2--------
---------------------2--------
---------------------2--------
---------------------4--------
---------------------4--------
---2-----------------2--------

* that part it's
F#m Bm A E F#m

---------------------2------------------------------------------4-------------------2------------1----------------------2
---------------------4------------------------------------------4-------------2-----------2-----------------------------4

I hate to be the odd man out, but just play. Don't worry about playing a specific song. Just play and build that connection with the guitar from the start. Who cares if it sounds bad, your starting out. Just jam; you learn so much more this way. That is what music is about: sticking to your own and being yourself.

On the other hand, you can and should learn songs, but I was just giving my input
It's like you're going into the fourth dimension. It's pure energy

Look On ,off the album Inside of Emptinessis, a great song for beginners...except for the insane solo (i have tried it a few times and i found that it is impossible for someone who has only been playing for bout 10 months...lol)

but yeah the verses and chourus are fairly simple. its such a great song too. definately one of my favorites from John.

(if you havent already heard the song)

Tuning: Standar.

This song has 3 parts, i don“t have the lyrics right now, but its very easy to find out
when to play each part.

A:

B|----------------2--22/5-5555------|-------------------2---2222/5555------|

Then:

B|-0---0000---0000---0000---0---------|-4---4444---4444---4444---4---------|
G|-1---1111---1111---1111---1---------|-5---5555---5555---5555---5---------|

E|-0---0000---0000---0000---0---------|-4---4444---4444---4444---4---------|

Then:

C:

B|--5--5-5-5--5-5---x-5-5---9-9-9-9--9-9--x-7-7----------------------------|

E|--5--5-5-5--5-5---------------------------7-7----------------------------|

Repeat A,B,C

For the solo just impro in B major.

*T = Fret with Thumb.

so there is something to keep you busy for now.
good luck with your guitar playing!
dont give up when you get frustrated.
when you are playing... just relax...have fun and rember that it doesnt matter what you are technically capable of yet...as long as you play from your heart, and it makes you feel good to strum those strings, thats all that matters.
it will get easier with practice.

Great topic idea, i'm really getting into playing my guitar lately and loving it.
I'm a beginner too, despite playing on and off for 3 years i'm actually commiting myself to learning more than a few chords this time :)

I too was wondering what John songs to start with, so all this has really helped, thanks everyone :P

Just need some songs to play and practice with.
But yeah thanks again everyone! :)

Hey, I couldn't find the tabs of Havana Affair covered by John at the ATP Festival in 2005, only the original and the cover by the Peppers. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a lot in advance! ;) (Sorry if this is the wrong thread.)
