I juste searched this Forum about Johns Influences and didn't really find a topic about them. I think it would also be nice to make an nice collection and post them on the IM hompage. Do you agree?
It would be best to post the evidence too, post articles or Interviews where he said it, so nobdy can say 'that's not true...'
or something like that.
I escpecially would like to know which guitar virtuoso songs he learned.
Thanks a lot guys!

He also had his funk influences: Parliament, Funkadelic, The Meters. Before the Beginning is in the same vein as Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, and he worked with George Clinton all those years in the Chilis.
I find his Zappa influence very interesting. Zappa was by far one of the wierdest guitarist/singer/song writers of the 60s-70s (and that's saying something). As I listen to John's work, I usually don't get through more than 3-4 songs without hearing some vocal qualities similar to Zappa's style of singing. If you're not familiar with Zappa, he would often use a lower voice and almost speak the words with slight pitch and tone changes. It was really somewhere in between singing and talking, and it's a quality John employs on quite a few songs.

good point imo they both want to be opera singers what with the italian roots. Its kinda interesting you note this . I myself saw steve coogan explaining how he does impressions and he also emphasized quick hi lo switches ( because they also share that ) , lots of funny characters do that like reporters and stuff. I myself like it the most when singers try funny things like the "smile from the streets..." - bum or diamanda gallas . Bad taste by the s-loads, me
