Ok, so this is a spin-off from the pinned thread at the top of the musicians section.

http://forums.invisi...?showtopic=1931

BSSM, here's what info is on John's official site:

Guitars:
Various Fender Stratocasters
12 string Maton acoustic on 'breaking the girl'
red 1969 fender jaguar

Amps:
Marshall stacks (Bass Head and Guitar Head together)
Soul to Squeeze is played through a fender twin reverb

Effects:
Original Crybaby Wah Wah
Boss OD2 Overdrive pedal
compressor and chorus pedals

I'm not convinced about the Jaguar, I thought the red one was bought when he rejoined the band. And for BSSM he used two jaguars as Iva explained in the original thread above?

So..... thoughts?

P.S. some posters made excellent contributions to the original thread. I'll copy and past those here shortly. Wouldn't want them to have to repeat themselves :(

his pedalboard consisted of:
- A Dunlop Crybaby (used on naked in the rain or BSSM....he also had a ibanez WH-10)
- Boss DS-1 Distortion
- A Fuzzface (not sure if a dunlop reissue or a original arbiter)
- A Boss Chorus Ensemble CE-1

he played mostly strats (usually w/ neck pickup) for recording & jaguars for songwriting.
He head one self-made-fretless strat!

I'm the slime oozin' out, from your TV set...

Copied what i wrote in the other thread.

he played a 1958 Fender Stratocaster, a fretless 1957 Fender Stratocaster (for Mellowship) a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom, a Martin and a Maton Acoustic and a Coral Sitar. Maybe he used the 1969 Fender Jaguar for UTB.
Effects: Ibanez WH-10, Dunlop CryBaby, DOD Stereo Chorus, EX Big Muff, BOSS OD-2...

Marshall JMP-1
Marshall Super Bass
Marshall JTM 45
Fender H.O.T
Marshall JCM 800

It really doesn't matter, which color the Jaguar had. xD
We know the year. That's enough :(

Yeah... it's hard to tell from the photos. Two jags, one blue one green. This guy seems to know what he's talking about, if I could understand him. Don't know what language it is.

http://www.topguitar...html&highlight=

He says the green turquoise jag is a 62.

He also mentions a Fender Bassman 59 amplifier. Do we know anything about that?

He says the BSSM strats(fretless and fretted) were 62's. The strat in the Suck my Kiss video is a 60's strat. It has a rosewood fingerboard. Basically 60's strats were rosewood fingerboard, 50's were maple. It wasn't until the 70's that fender offered both. But maybe John did play a 50's strat on BSSM, as Rafael said above. I don't know :( :)

Thanks for reposting Rafael. I was going to copy that but I am very lazy :devlish:

He recorded 'They're Red Hot' with a late '60 Fender Jaguar

If you look at the neck, you'll see binding and you can see a part of the body. If you look closely, you can see a part of the Jaguar-style controls.

Lol, cheers Rafael.

Confusing. Just out of curioisity does anyone know what the Fender "H.O.T." practise amp he mentions is? I've never heard of that model before.

Thanks for the pic Lennart. Every little bit helps.

I'll put up a full list of what we've gathered in a few days, and if there are any mistakes or whatever you can shout out before we move on.

Thanks triplepant, looks like a cool little amp too. Nice red knobs.

I wonder what overdubs he recorded with it.

Ok, I'm thinking something like this:

On album:

Guitars:
1958 Fender Stratocaster
1957 Fender Stratocaster(fretless)
1969 Fender Jaguar, ocean turquoise coloured
1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Martin dreadnought acoustic
Maton 12 string acoustic on "Breaking the Girl"
Coral Electric Sitar

Amps:
Marshall 2555 100-watt lead head
Marshall Major 200-watt bass head
Marshall 4x12 cabs
Fender H.O.T practice amp
Fender Twin Reverb on "Soul to Squeeze"

Effects:
Electro-Harmonix Big Muff
Ibanez WH-10
DOD stereo chorus(for splitting the signal)

Also used on tour:

Various Stratocasters
A Dunlop Crybaby wah
Boss DS-1 Distortion
Phaser

------------------------------

Just to clarify, I left out the blue jaguar because I can't find any pics/vids of him using it in recording/touring. I think he just left it at home with his old ibanez guitars. Maybe thats what he used on Niandra/Smile?

The section on touring comes from here:
http://www.invisible-movement.net/v/magazi...ool_03.jpg.html
In it he says he only used the Big Muff and Ibanez wah on the album.

I changed the amps we previously mentioned because beside the picture of John holding the two guitars you see the list of what he toured with- more effects, the two marshall amps(2555 and a Major).

And in the piece Rafael posted above John says:
"for the basics I used two Marshalls, a guitar head for edge and a bass head for punch and low end"

So we these not likely be the BSSM amps? I think the ones we had before(JMP-1,Super Bass etc.) were from Californication.

Please tell me if I'm wrong <_<

Lucky you! Are you sure he used it on BSSM? Have you seen it in interview or video, Funkymonks video maybe?

I really need people to butt in here and tell me what they think. Rafael, Triplepant, Lennart, Mr. Maniac. I know you're there! :D

Basically what I'm thinking is, if you read my previous post, follow the link to the Guitarschool interview from 1992 and read the 1991 interview Rafael posted in post #6, we have the BSSM info from John directly.

John says he used TWO Marshall amps, then the Fender H.O.T. and then went straight into the board for the rest. He doesn't mention JMP-1 or JTM 45 or anything else. I'm not saying he didn't own them(in the Mother's Milk thread Martin posted a link to a clip with a JCM 800), I'm just saying we don't have any proof that he used them on BSSM. Yet. If you have proof PLEASE shout out.

Sorry to be an ass about this, but I think there's a bit of misinformation on the net about this stuff and there's some stuff we'll just never know. But if we talk to each other like this, go back and forth(with examples), we'll get to the TRUTH about what John used on each album and the site will have an ACCURATE gear section.

For example at the start of this thread I was saying John was using a 60's strat for BSSM. Rafael posted the interview where John says it was a 58. I'm not going to argue with that. So if I'm wrong just say "shut the fuck up Mick!", or if you agree with what I said in my previous post say so too.

It's a democracy here B)

I think it would be nice to post pictures of his pedals/guitars/amps with the finished GEAR LIST

I really don't know nothing about this early period, so I'll just step back and leave it to the professionals :D
I might join you on later gear sections...

I was wondering why you hadn't showed up :D

I'm sure photos would be a great idea later on. Once we've got this all figured out B)

It should get easier as we go on I think. John hadn't really started giving those super detailed interviews about recording at this stage.

That's alright kallee.

It'll be a while yet before we get to making a final version for Iva to put up on the site.

You could well be right though, so in the meantime we'll keep an open mind! Thanks

Yeah thank you.

I found out where i probably first read about it: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/archiv.../t-1187100.html (search for JMP)

Put its second hand information for all i know so i still can't be certain..

Edit: Actually this video was the thing that first got my attention; the amp in the back looked like the one i just bought so i got interested.
