I wrote it in my first post i think.
John used a fretless Guitar for the solo on Mellowship Slinky in B Major.

That fretless guitar from the Youtube video is a custom made guitar for John.
He didn't use it in public or on any record yet.

but the one from the YouTube video looks like the Fender STRATOCASTER he uses... So, did he actually replace the neck of the STRAT for the recording of BSSM ???

And when was the video from YouTube recorded...?

He didn't replace any neck.
He's got a 57 Strat with jumbo frets and didn't like them, so he decided to make this strat to a fretless and used it on Mellowship.

so... the guitar on the video is not 'the' Fender STRATOCASTER we all know and worship...? It's another Fender?

and what exacly are "jumbo frets"?

EDIT: I also watched the video of JF recording the solo of Mellowship Slinky in B Major, and what I saw was STRAT (maybe fretless) not with that glass plate for the frets, but regularly marked frets and wood-like fretboard...

Yeah because Tele's have a very sharp edge compared to a Strat. they usually put Tissues und the Tape to make it softer. Imagine playing with the Tele every Night like he did, e.g. on the Off the Map Tour.

What are Jumbo-Frets?

You've surely watched the video from the Funky Monks DVD. There he is playing his '58 strat i think,
which is not fretless.
He used the fretless one for overdubbing.

He used the fretless one for overdubbing.

And then again, by 1997 he didn't own any guitar at all anymore, so this fretless with glass plate is a different one from the one he used to overdub the solo with on the BSSM recordings...

My head is really spinning now. I don't know what this has turned into after the first page, I just need help on how to sort it and make it most user-friendly for everyone. Does anyone have organisation skills to suggest something?

My suggestion would be to sort the gear by album and by major tour. If there's gear that somebody knows hes used, but isn't sure when, that could go into a sepearate catagory. Forget about trying to get as detailed as the signal chain path, at least for now. So to get the community in on it, I would probably start a thread each week or so asking for info about an album he's done. That way, it will be more organized than this initial thread (which has so much info it's a bit overwhelming to have all at once).

I agree with Snork- one thread per week for each album sounds like a good way to get through it. The posters here obviously have all the knowledge needed. It just needs to be brought together.
