I have a couple things a couple of people were writing, but they never finished it, unfortunately...and all of that was before the Stadium Arcadium tour.

So, basically, what I know about John's gear as someone who doesn't play and record music is err...lame.

I know that he's using Dunlop Tortex picks, D'Addario XL strings and I can make a difference among his main guitars, I also knew that Gallo bought most of them and that the weird clear guitar on some 2000 pics was Dave Grohl's. I also know that John had two jaguars during the BSSM tour - green one that's now exhibited in a Hard Rock Cafe somewhere and a blue one that disappeared in the house fire in 1992/3. And yes, all acoustic ones are mostly Martins.

Now that you laughed your asses off at me, could you please help? :geek:

I was thinking of a separate page for gear used on each album and, if applicable, on a specific tour. And then each piece of gear would have its own page with a photo, description and relevant links, if any. First thing to get done would be pages about guitars, but then I guess it would be nice to do something on the other instruments, even including the weirdest ones.

Who's in? Of course you'll be credited! :deal:

OK, it's hard to do this! And the reason is simple - nobody (those who get backstage or sidestage or whatever...) takes pictures of john's pedals, only John! I have some pictures of the pedalboard and it's big! I mean BIG!!!

We all know for sure that he uses Jim Dunlop TORTEX .60 mm picks,
D'Addario XL .10 - .46 strings (I think those are regular light)...
Then, we all know he uses:
IBANEZ WH10 Wah pedal,
BOSS DS1 and DS2 distortions,
Line6 DL4 Delay modelling pedal,
Line6 LM4 Filter modelling pedal.

Now comes the tricky part...

I'm not sure about the rest of the pedals:

He uses some BOSS chorus ensemble pedal (I don't know which one exactly),
Big Muff (don't know the details),
switch pedal for BOSS distortion (I guess for DS2 as it has remote switching option)

There are some more pedals that I don't know nothing about, so... It remains a mystery!!! :D

Amps are Marshall, and John has two Silver Jubilee 100 heads and one Major 200W head
Cabinets are also Marshall 4x12 with stock Celestions

I'm so tired now of all this typing, so I'm gonna take some time to sleep and will continue with the gear (guitars and stuff...) soon :D

He uses SO much stuff so it's going to be very hard to list it in terms of separate albums, a lot of gear would overlap... but it's definitely doable :) First things first... to list all the gear... I'll list what I can think of and will come back and edit this post whenever I think of more. Apologies if I list something already mentioned by someone else but I'm tired and cranky so blah :)

He replaces the .10 string with an .11 string.

John uses a lot of effects. The main problem is that he has got so many and is changing from record to record and even from gig to gig :D. Moreover there are a lot of effects that sound very similar to each other.
And he has no Big Muff right now. He gave it to Flea :thumbsupsmileyanim:

On Mother's Milk...
i don't know, what he's using there exactly. Probably some Ibanez guitars, a Fender Strat and the 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom
Effects: Ibanez WH-10, Boss OD-1

On BSSM...
he played a 1958 Fender Stratocaster, a fretless 1957 Fender Stratocaster (for Mellowship) a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom, a Martin and a Maton Acoustic and a Coral Sitar :D Maybe he used the 1969 Fender Jaguar for UTB. I'm not sure
Effects: Ibanez WH-10, Dunlop CryBaby, DOD Stereo Chorus, EX Big Muff, BOSS OD-2
And lot more...

On Californication...
he played a 1955 Fender Stratocaster, a 1962 Fender Stratocaster, a 1965 Fender Telecaster, a 1962 Fender Jaguar, a 1955 Gretsch White Falcon and a 1950 Sibson ES175 and a Maton Acoustic
Effects:Ibanez WH-10, Boss CE-1, Boss DS-1, Boss DS-2, Boss FZ-3, MXR Phase 90
and more i think...

On BTW...
a 1955 Fender Stratocaster, a 1962 Fender Stratocaster, a Gretsch White Falcon, a 1963 Telecaster, and a Martin 0-15
Effects:Ibanez WH-10, Line6 FM4, Line6 DL4, Boss DS-2, Boss CE-1
and more...

On SA...
a 1955 Fender Stratocaster, a 1962 Fender Stratocaster, a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a Martin 0-15
Effects:Ibanez WH-10,Custom CryBaby, Boss CE-1, Boss DS-1, Boss DS-2, EH English Muff'n, EH Big Muff, Holy Grail Reverb,EH Mistress Flanger, Moog MF-105 MuRF, MF-105B Bass MuRF, MF-101 Low-Pass Filter, MF-103 Phaser
and more...

Not really complete and accurate, but a beginning.
Now i'm falling asleep  :D

Guitars:

His famous, beaten, scratched 1962 Fender STRATOCASTER:

Posted Image

The orange Fender TORONADO (used on Can't stop video):

Posted Image

Gibson Les Paul BLACK BEAUTY custom:

Posted Image

Fender MUSTANG (I don't know if John ever used this one during recording of an album or live, but I'm sure he has one just like this):

Posted Image

Gretsch WHITE FALCON (although his Gretsch is so dirty and old, not like this one, but it's the same guitar):

Posted Image

red Fender JAGUAR (John uses this one for warm-up before he goes on stage):

Posted Image

12 string Maton MESSIAH (used on Breaking the girl, and some other songs, but I'm not sure if this is THE ONE that John has (had) ):

Posted Image

That's it for now on Guitars... And, by the way, only the first STRAT and the red JAGUAR are original John's guitars, others are found on official company websites, or unofficial websites about guitars...

This is the Jim Dinlop TORTEX .60 guitar pick (but John also has these with RHCP logos, and custom text):

There was this site where John discussed all effects used on SA. Isn't that somewhere on the board?

I think we can get a long way here, there are a lot of sites where they have topics about his gear he used throughout his career. Im mostly interested in what he's using currently! Anyone got an idea?

Gear:

Guitars:

Frusciante is known to use mostly vintage guitars, including:

*Two 1940s Martin acoustics
*1950s Gibson ES-335 Two Color Sunburst
*1955 Gretsch White Falcon
*1957 Fender Stratocaster Two Color Sunburst, maple fretboard
*1960s Gibson SG Sunburst
*1961 Fender Stratocaster Two Color Sunburst, rosewood fretboard
*1961 Gibson SG Custom Cherry Red
*1961 Fender Stratocaster, Olympic White, rosewood fretboard
*1962 Fender Stratocaster, Three Color Sunburst, rosewood fretboard
*1962 Fender Jaguar Fiesta Red
*1963 Fender Custom Telecaster, rosewood fretboard
*1965 Fender Custom Telecaster, rosewood fretboard
*1965 Fender Duo-Sonic Olympic White, rosewood fretboard
*1969 Fender Mustang Fiesta Red (Practice Guitar)
*1969 Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty
*Ibanez RG 250 DX (used during Mother's Milk)
*Maton Messiah 12-string acoustic (which can be heard on "Breaking the Girl")
*Mosrite St.George Gold 12-string electric
*Fender Precision Bass Olympic White, rosewood fretboard

His 1955 Stratocaster was used in the recording of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and the 1962 Stratocaster was given to him as a present by bandmate Anthony Kiedis (due to John having sold all of his guitars during a particularly low drugs period) after he returned to the band. He has also been seen playing a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty guitar, mainly during the Red Hot Chili Peppers tour in 2004 for the cover song, "Black Cross", he also can be seen playing a Gibson SG Custom in the music video for "Fortune Faded".

John has been seen playing a Toronado in the video for "Can't Stop", although on a commentary audio track for the music video included on the DVD that accompanied the 2003 RHCP Greatest Hits album, John states that he only used the guitar for the video because the director asked him to.

As of 2006, John has been seen playing a number of different guitars in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' music video for "Dani California", involving the band paying tribute to several bands including The Beatles and Nirvana. Towards the end of the video, the band "become" themselves and John plays a white 1961 Fender Stratocaster, with its visible wear and tear. It is similar to a white Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix used, who is one of John's major influences.

John uses his beat up red Mustang to warm up before a concert. One of his original Jaguars was stolen back in the early '90s, though it is not certain if the blue or green one was stolen. John also has a white Fender Precision Bass, which is seen in the "Past Recedes" video. Most likely, it is a vintage pre-'65 P-Bass. Also visible in the video is a miniature acoustic.

Amplification:

*Fender Blackface Showman
*Fender Twin Reverb (John keeps this next to his pedalboard)
*Marshall JTM-45
*Marshall 100W Super Bass
*Marshall Silver Jubilee 100
*Marshall 200W Major

He primarily uses Marshall amplifiers, mainly two Silver Jubilee and a 200-watt Major. Although, has also been seen using amps by Vox and Fender.
Effects/Pedalboard
John has used and/or is still using the following effects.

Distortion/Fuzz/Overdrive:
*BOSS OD-1 Overdrive (used early in his career with the RHCP, but quickly removed from his pedal board)
*BOSS DS-1 Distortion (used solely in the Mother's Milk era, and for the song "Otherside")
*BOSS DS-2 Distortion
*Electro-Harmonix USA Big Muff Pi Distortion/Sustainer
*Electro Harmonix - English Muff'n
*Electro-Harmonix Graphic Fuzz
*Z.Vex Fuzz Factory

Modulation/Filter:
*BOSS CE-1 Chorus Ensemble (Also used for Vibrato effects greatly used on "Stadium Arcadium").
*Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger & Filter Matrix
*Electro-Harmonix Frequency Analyzer
*Electro-Harmonix Micro Synthesizer
*Electro-Harmonix Tube Zipper
*Electro-Harmonix POG (Polyphonic Octave Generator)
*Line 6 FM4 Filter Modeler
*Moog MF-103 MoogerFooger 12 Stage Phaser
*MXR Phase 90 (re-issue)
*Dunlop Univibe Stereo Chorus

Wah-Wah:
*Jim Dunlop Crybaby Wah-Wah
*Ibanez WH-10 Wah-Wah (John's preferred Wah today. John has several of these pedals, as they are long discontinued, and due to being made of plastic, break easily.)
*ZVex Wah-Probe

Delay/Reverb:
*Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb
*Electro-Harmonix 16-second Digital Delay
*Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler

Other:
*BOSS Master Switch
*BOSS FV-50 Volume pedal
*MXR Micro Amp (John uses this to get more output from the pickups in his Strats)
Frusciante's pedalboard for the Californication tour was rather modest, only five pedals, though his effects arsenal for the By the Way tour was considerably larger. John used a wide variety of modular synth gear in the studio for the making of
Stadium Arcadium.

I don't think that this is 100% accurate, because some informations are not so true (at least I think so), but it helps!

Does anybody know which wireless transmitters does John use for his guitars when performing live (maybe he even uses those while recording)???

I hear a lot of people saying, that John actually used one of Dave Grohl's Dan Armstrong guitars. Is that really true?
I always thought he had his own one...

OK, we're still not even close to finishing this topic... It's an endless story that probably only John Frusciante knows...

I have a couple of questions about this, and these are (for me) really hard to answer:

1. How does John link all his amps and cabinets together (he puts microphones in front of every cabinet, but I don't know if microphones are for the speakers around the arena or for the other row of cabinets)

2. Are all his guitars connected with all pedals? Is there a WAH or DISTORTION for each guitar or...?

3.There are some things on his pedalboard that I don't know what they are and what they are for (just for the heck of it or for some reason...?):

Looks like most of the info floating around out there is in this post, just a couple of additions...

I may have skipped past it, but John uses a mellotron, as well as a piano. I don't know the makes.

Also, to my knowledge he didn't use any of those MOOG pedals on SA. He used his giant-ass synth. There's some pictures of it out there, as well as a video on youtube where he explains the making of Dani. I'm at work, so don't have the time to track those down but it's out there. The moogs are used live to help emulate what he was able to do with his synth.

Edit: I take that back. As from an interview... "...After they were recorded, I ran them through a Moog MF-105 MuRF (Multiple Resonance Filter Array) pedal six times, and recorded the results on individual tracks..."

Additionally, to answer some of the questions in the post just prior to mine...

"2. Are all his guitars connected with all pedals? Is there a WAH or DISTORTION for each guitar or...?"

Describing the signal path is kinda difficult to do. I think what is most likely is that there is one signal path going from one end of the board to the other. Meaning, each guitar doesn't have it's own pedals. The pedals are arranged, and then whichever guitar he's using is plugged into the beginning pedal. The order in which the pedals are connected contributes greatly to the sound, but is so specific to each guitarist that I don't think anyone other than John and a select few know in what way they're connected.

I do know he goes into some detail in a Guitar Player interview on how he made use of the MOOGS so there's probably a little info regarding that aspect of his pedal board layout anyhow.

All of that is to say, we'll likely only know what pedals he uses. The acutal signal path through the pedals would take either John commenting personally, or the tech who sets up his pedal board commenting. I'll bet even Flea doesn't know Johns signal path. If someone can pull up the guitarplayer interview where he discusses the Moogs, I think he actually does go into slight detail on the signal path for those pedals specifically.
