I can't find anything about a release date, had anyone heard any news? It's gotta be soooooon, surely. Maybe he's just being a perfectionist... but what could he find to perfect, he is flawless already!
I am praying he does a small tour. I already decided I will fly to any corner of the US to see him. LA? i'm there, NYC? you got it. A solo show by JF would truly be a dream. And if I could somehow meet him... *drifting away inside my head* yeah, gosh. Wow. Just to tell him thank you. WOW.

BUT there are some news. John is mixing Warpaint's (Emily Kokal's band) new EP:
the user "Gong Li" posted this today:

plus changing drummers and an unknown accordeon player
but as from now a known mixer...
http://www.myspace.com/worldwartour
ep will feature five songs and will be released through both myspace and i-tunes
release within a few weeks, john is still mixing but is currently in europe with emily
of course you would have known this, if you were a friend of:

Whatever makes him happy, though...
One day when his new solo album arrives, it'll be even sweeter after such a long wait, don't you think?

John blamed it to "the usual record label stuff" for it back then (for Shadows) and said he was proud it was finally out on some of the first 2004 interviews; I guess if he's not releasing it, it's rather because he's involved in many other things and projects or it has more to do with his management/record label rather than him not wanting to release it
I mean, if he did it, I don't see why he couldn't want to release it as soon as possible unless, as you said, it's just because he isn't proud of it.. but I don't think so (it could be though, seeing Ryan Hewitt often changed the info on John's album on his MySpace), maybe he's just enjoying his free time after being on tour for so much
but I'm quite positive it's just because he's into many other stuff (possibly some new album of him as well; so it could be he's just waiting to finish everything and then put them all out, as he did in 2004) and also because of record label issues
I don't think the Chilis will start working together again on new stuff before some other while (and I mean more than just a couple of months).. I know what Chad said, but, you know, you don't really have to count on that so much (they also said they wanted to do a simple album with S.A. and they ended up recording 38 complete songs)
but you're right when you said that if it's not out before a new Chili's album, than we'll have to wait a lot more, as, obviously, his record label won't ever release a John's new album right some months before or after a new Chili's album is on the way
in fact all of his album were recorded and then released during Rhcp breaks/"hiatus"
it's funny how we're wondering and talking so much about this album coming out when we have no real consistent news/info about it
anyway I think it will be out by the end of the year (fingers crossed)
c'mon, John! put the damn album out!

I don't mean for this to come off as sounding angry and whatnot, (I have a tremendous amount of respect for John and I love him as an artist), but I find these excuses about “record company” hold-ups to be ridiculous. I highly doubt that John’s starving for cash and I think if he really wanted to release music, he’d find a way to do it. Didn’t he say once at a solo show that he’d try to get the songs to the fans, through the internet or something? So I just don't get these record label excuses. If his record company is causing him so much trouble, can't he just start his own?
As many people have suggested, he's probably in one of his perfectionist moods with this album. Otherwise, maybe his heart's really not in it. (The thought of that makes me sad and worried.) I just find it really atypical for someone who is SO into making music to be taking this long to put out a new album. (Hasn't it been about 4 years since he recorded SCWP and the 6 from 2004?)
Either way, I remain optimistic that a new album will be released. And I agree with Iva, it will be THAT much sweeter after such a long wait.

Well, as someone who is fond on creating art, you (and many others) will probably be able to relate to what I'm about to say: in most of the cases, no matter how much people praise me when I'd written or designed something, the only opinion I rely onto is my own. I tend to throw many designs for the sites and graphic art away, even poems sometimes; because there's something I didn't like about them, I didn't feel like it was me who created that. As someone who's very creative and does many things, on a much bigger scale, I assume John is perfectionist with whatever he has on his mind at a certain moment: if he wants a perfectly-produced and polished album, he works until he gets something in the quality of SCWP. If he wants to get it done in a couple of days and try someone else's place, someone else's equipment and someone else as a producer, we'll get a DC EP. Regardless of how hi-fi or lo-fi it may be, if it's perfect in his own eyes, he'll feel ready to put it out.
Also, someone on OHG mentioned that John was not THIS big before Stadium Arcadium and that Warner might have "plans" for him and that they wouldn't let him play around releasing indie stuff when he feels like it. I don't know if that could play such an important rule, but with RHCP skyrocketing onto the position of the most popular contemporary band in the world, it could be partly true.
