Hi

I don't know if this is a stupid question or not but I'm going to ask anyway. :)

Right, so we know the Black Beauty is a Gibson Les Paul. But is it JF and us that call it the Black Beauty or is that the actual name of it?!

As in, I have a Fender Strat and I call it the Wee Girl but obviously I couldn't go into a shop and ask for a Wee Girl!

So if I went into a shop and asked for a Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty would i get handed the same kinda thing that JF plays? Not that I'm going to go out a buy one but more just to clarify the point. Possibly a bit rambling but d'you get me?! :P

Okay confused now by the whole pick up conversation. From what i can gather from wikapedia John's Black Beauty seems to be (unsurprisingly!) around a '54 as he has 2 single pick ups but they are both together. Have a look.....

Okay just an update. I was looking at photos on my pc and completly by accident stumbled on this one.

So i guess that sorts out the problem of how many pick ups he has. He has 2 sets of single coil pick ups. If I'm looking at them right, they are all singles aren't they? They're not doubles disguised as singles?..... Once again I apologise for my meandering and confused mind!!!!! Anyway here is the photo!

I think those are humbuckers, which can be splitted into single coils.

Maybe he just replaced the pick ups of an usual one with those.

^^ yeah, that's most likely it. Lots of musicians replace the pickups with humbuckers. I love humbuckers much better than single coil pickups, and most musicians do too.

Ye see I didn't even know they existed! I'm learning on this here thread! :)

Actually thinking about it, it would make sense for him to change the pick ups for 2 humbuckers, it suits the style of music that he plays with that. It's a much deeper rawer sound - if ye get me! Anyway he only uses it live for specific songs with a specific sound so that makes sense!

I was wandering around the net and found this conversation and thought I’d add my latest bit of wisdom re the single coil pickups v humbuckers/single coils.

So we’ve agreed that they look like 2 single coils stuck together, well from talking to guys in college last year I think that they could be both. Humbuckers but if you flip a switch they can change to single coils…..I know that this is possible…….

The mystery deepens! :)

Ok so I was just pottering on the net and it seems that John could have the original ‘PAF’ pick ups on the guitar. Here is an article on the and as you can see about half way down, they are 2 single pick ups with the sound being taken from both of them…..

Ok. Hi :)

I think, as Jurjen said above, they are just plain humbuckers. That is, they're not any kind of split single/humbucker type configuration as you're college mates suggested. If they were this would require John butchering his cool vintage guitar, and he's not really been known to do that kind of thing.

The only reason these look different from regular humbuckers is because they have no covers though, that's all.

That's some good pottering though, I guess they could be PAF's, and as that article you linked to says they do sound slightly different to regular humbuckers.

That's a very cool guitar. You could buy a really accurate remake of it from Gibson for like 3 grand or something

Hope that helps ;)
